Britt Assombalonga not fazed by early return to Nottingham Forest with Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough come to the City Ground on Saturday, August 19, just four games into the new season and Assombalonga is likely to get a frosty reception - but the striker views it as a challenge

Britt Assombalonga says he is already looking forward to returning the City Ground with Middlesbrough at the start of next season.

The striker left Nottingham Forest for Teeside in a £15m deal on Monday, but he will be back on Saturday August 19, when the teams meet in the Championship.

Assombalonga may not get a warm reception from home fans, but he says he is excited to go back no matter what.

“It’s a challenge. I thrive off the challenge,” said Assombalonga.

“It’s a big game, four games in. I can’t wait to go back.”

Middlesbrough were the only team to meet the 24-year-old’s release clause as they saw off competition from Premier League sides Burnley and Watford.

Forest tried to persuade the former Peterborough man that he had a future at the City Ground, but he was keen to move north - where he believes he has joined a club capable of challenging for promotion.

Assombalonga is hopeful he will soon be a top flight player after being impressed by Boro boss Garry Monk.

“He’s down to earth. He showed he wanted to work with me. He’s got a goal to get back to the Premier League and I bought into that,” he said.

“I only had one option and that was Middlesbrough.

“It’s been good. I’ve had a good first training session. It was nice to meet all the boys, it went well.

“The aim is to get promoted. It’s the aim for a lot of clubs in the Championship. It’s a big season. Everyone is ready.

“You see all the players coming in. It’s going to be a good one.”

Assombalonga scored 14 goals last season, but has not set a target for the coming campaign - but he does hope to play his part in firing Boro back into the top flight at the first attempt.

“I’ve never ever set myself targets for scoring. I go with the flow and just try to get as many as I can,” he told talkSPORT.

Forest, in the meantime, are looking to sign a replacement for the striker, with Mark Warburton and Frank McParland having drawn up a list of potential replacements over the past weeks, as Assombalonga's desire to leave became apparent.

'do do do sh*t Assombalonga'...
Least they won't be signing that tonight😂

He usually has a mare against them. He went clean through 3 times in one match missing them all.....standard.

I still think he's a 'better' option than Akpom. He at least gets into positions to miss.
