BrewDog Beers

Beers and Lagers are all about marketing, it's 99% of it, and Brew Dog are brilliant at it.

I'm convinced nobody actually "likes" the taste of larger or beer though, and they just drink them as it's the done thing, or they just want the feeling of being drunk or tipsy.

It's like craft beers etc, nobody really likes them, they taste like crap made in someone's wheely bin (and some probably are), people just think it's cool, so it's like a mental trick on themselves or others. It works though, so fair play, everyone's happy.

I still drink larger, not so much beer, but only when I want to be boozy, wouldn't drink it if there was nil effect. Would drink spirits straight from the off, but they go down at the same pace as l would drink a pint, so that's no sustainable on the wallet, head or liver.
I actually like the taste of lager. My taste has changed as I have grown older, I struggle with a lot of soft drinks now that I would have no problem quaffing as a kid.

I drink the lower alcohol versions generally. One of my locals sells both Dortmunder Union and Dortmunder Vier, the latter being far weaker but suits my pallet. It's still fairly strong at 4% but I prefer a beer that allows me to shovel a few down.

I've just read the co-founder has stood down and made me think. Is it just good marketing? Or do other people actually like their beers? When I was drinking I tried many and went to a couple of BrewDog bars. Plus now tried all the zero % beers and I haven't found one (alcohol or non) that doesn't taste thin and a bit bland. Am I expecting too much?
You can sum up Brewdog by the fact that their ownership filed to trademark the word "punk".

Dortmunder Union easily my favourite tipple. Has been since I first tried it in Rita's in Redcar around the time of my 18th (eight or so years ago). Shame it's not more readily available.

I can't stand lager, but if I'm forced to drink a macro lager beer (like at a family event in a pub where the only other options are John Smiths or Guinness) it'll either be Staropramen or Birra Moretti.

I’m not saying everyone, but they are loads who jump on the bandwagon just because x, y or z have said it’s awful or Billy Big Balls doesn’t like the owners.
The majority of those people will have likely only ever drank their mass produced beers anyway.

I was a big fan of Brewdog back in 2017 because of their "Dog" and "Overworks" series. The majority of drinkers won't have even heard of those.

Look past all their marketing bull**** and they do actually know how to make decent beers, particularly stouts.

I’m on holiday and sat in a bar yesterday where a group of about ten men came in, four ordered cocktails, the other six just bantered them for ages.

You know the style, proper unfunny banter because the pina coloda had an umbrella and pineapple attached. Then one realised the cost of a round had become unbalanced.

I reckon there’s two reasons right there. 1 - unfunny banter that becomes irksome. 2- it’s naffs the rounds up and becomes irksome.
I utterly hate the concept of rounds anyway outside of more than 2 other people. Much rather just buy my own drinks.

The bigger the group the more someone benefits from free drinks / loses out by buying extra rounds unless they finish on the perfect person. Going to the bar myself has never been a huge inconvenience.

I don't drink pints other than cider and usually only have that in summer, so I can usually excuse myself from them by the fact my drinks usually cost far more than a pint anyway

I used to drink with a lad who was an expert at going in big rounds and going to the bar last. He was saving a fortune every week. His cousin (hello Peter), who comes on this board, used to ******* him for it but he would try it again next time we all went out.

Well, I'm an Equity Punk (....oh for fu-). I bought shares / equity in the company back in 2010, something like that when I had some spare cash, I like beer, they had a good ethos and - HAHA! - it seemed a decent investment.

The company has gone to the dogs really. About five years ago, they sold a huge amount of the equity to an American firm, for an enormous amount of money. I believe that -if rumour is to be believed - James Watt personally took about £26m out of the company. Personally, I would have retired at that point. All the rubbish about sexual issues, not paying the staff, etc,

I agree that most of the new beers they produce are rank. I will still order a Punk or some of the older beers though.

So what did I get for my money? Well, 10% off in bars and online. I also get an invite to what looks like the most horrible self congratulatory jolly up at the AGM each year - which is in the North of Scotland so impractical really. I got some free things called Alchemy something like that, which were about 70% proof - they were distilled from the beers, and absolutely disgusting - it tasted like they were dregs from the bottom of the brew tuns. I've still got (I think) two unopened boxes and some odd ones knocking around, probably off by now.

I have wanted to sell for about 8 or 9 years now because I really got sick of all the b***ks surrounding them. Here's the kicker - you can't. The company has never gone public despite, quoting from the brochure I got, expecting to go public within two years. Instead you have designated "selling periods" when they feel like it when you'll get an offer which is rubbish compared to what they expected they would make. There's a bloke who will buy them independently, but treats anyone wanting to sell as the worst person ever for doubting the great leaders and he lowballs everyone while insulting them. "Shareholders" (actually equity) had no say over the sale of shares and have very little say about the way that the company keeps getting into trouble, self made. There's a real zealotry about some of the equity owners as well, like "how dare you doubt this wonderful company". The forums can be a cess pit. "I want to sell". "Well **** off then", being about the level it gets to.

I occasionally use the discount to buy presents, and extremely occasionally for myself, though generally it's cheaper in Tesco, and has has been said, the Aldi stuff is just as good and a lot cheaper.

I really can't wait to sell. I don't particularly need the money. but it was a bad decision looking back.
