Brain Drain

This goes through the change in philosophy during the Thatcher period. Blair did little to reverse it and we're now in the state we are.
Cheers I will have a read of that. Blair has to be culpable too, no attempt to reverse things.

Back in the day I received a grant to study. The education system didn't have to worry about making money.

Now universities employ a large department solely concerned with increasing finance. It's more profitable to sell places to wealthy families than provide a scholarship for less well off locals.
Well that is correct.
However, I dont recall lots of working class Northern people doing Uni in the 70s and 80s. It was more Polys and Tech colleges.

An uneducated working class is less dangerous than an educated one. The changes to the education system were made a long time ago, for me the change has worked and is benefitting those it was designed to suit.
Well that doesnt make much sense.
There are more kids in uni these days than ever before.

That's probably true but there has been an upward trend and the question really is whether that has continued or tailed off.

To be clear, I have no idea.

Probably tailed off in recent years due to the English uni costs, which are far too high especially for STEM degrees. Also young people are choosing apprentices more.
Not sure the brexit thing stands up too well as Euro nations would tend to stick to there own countries cheaper courses. I know some Germans used to choose uni in Austria as its cheaper.
I guess Irish students yearn for the higher UK colleges I dont know.

I would tend to agree about brexit on this matter. We are quite expensive compared to some European countries. I think Netherlands is still free.

Not entirely true. University education in Holland is not free but it is subsidised by the Government. That said basic rate tax is also higher there.
I was working there a few years ago, maybe 5 years, I am sure it was free then. Taxation for education, I am all over that one. Not withstanding they May have an overall fairer tax system, I don't know.
