Boycoutt Weatherspoons, people of Middlesborough

Interesting take, supported by many people.

But much as I believe Brexit will be a disaster, I find it difficult to stop going somewhere purely based on an owner's view and support of Brexit.
I wonder if anyone has stopped supporting Middlesbrough FC based purely on the owners support (including financial) of a lying Government who will do anything at all to ensure that Brexit happens. At any cost, it seems.
Let's be honest though, Tim was a front line flag waver for Brexit, it wasn't that he supported Brexit, he actively and very publicly campaigned for it. He even used his business to supply propoganda to the masses, free of any cost to the official campaigns. Providing free board and food for some campaigns, free use of his premises for debating and supporting brexit, coasters with alleged brexit benefits and fakery about EU dangers.

Boycott pubs that are already struggling with everything that’s going on? You know Tim Martin doesn’t actually work in the pubs in Boro? It’s local people working in them and their jobs that would be at risk if they close.

Brilliant 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Crack on.

Oh, and all this ‘the way he treated his staff in lockdown’ rubbish. Might want to look into that a bit more. Nobody was laid off, they all got paid every week from beginning to end, including all the bonuses they were owed from before lockdown once the pubs all reopened.
Lionel...he initially tried to push them out, showed no support for them, but then public backlash forced him to climb down. There are plenty of non Spoons pubs in town, saving them would be my preferred priority

I've been in a few decent Wetherspoons.

A lot of misinformation out there, particularly about how the staff are treat. I mean, no zero hour contracts, paid above minimum wage, proper training, paid holidays and sick pay. A lot of people are outraged on behalf of staff whereas the few people I know love working there.

Oh, and as for a comment above about won't go because the owner funds the Tories, well, one certain S Gibson also funds the Tories. But hey.

When you try to take the moral boycott high ground, you really need to be consistent.

It's not so much whether he funds the Tories, though if he does that is another good reason not to give him any of my money to do it, it's his absolute pig ignorance on Brexit, actually his outright lies on it, that stopped me being a customer. I also haven't bought any JCB's, subscribed to The Spectator, gone salmon fishing at Junction Pool, frequented Annabel's nightclub or any Rocco Forte Hotels, used the Bristol Port Company for cargo handling, utilised or invested in Hargreaves Lansdowne, Marshall Wallace, CQS, Somerset Capital, Red Kite, Marathon or Odey Asset Management hedge funds, traded on the CMC Foreign Exchange Market, imported/exported high end motor vehicles primarily to the US and China or taken specialist motor finance, supported Crystal Palace, used Go Skippy/Eldon Insurance. (just have a good re-read of that list of businesses I'm boycoutting, they were the biggest donors to the Leave campaigns, that should tell you all about who benefits from it. Even JCB, who might appear at first glance to been a normal country, are not affected because they long ago had to establish themselves in other countries to avoid the red tape everyone else will have to thus giving them a competitive advantage through Brexit. The insurance company's boss's backing might also seem like an indicator that many people or businesses genuinely just think brexit will be good for everyone, no special interests at play. Until you read that Banks' Eldon Insurance, whose CEO Elizabeth Bilney was also in charge at Leave.EU. saw profits leapt to £16.7m for the first half of 2017 after recording a £284,000 profit in 2015 and a loss of £22,500 in 2016 despite a 40% increase in revenue. Banks said that Eldon's business had been transformed by the same AI technology used in the Brexit campaign).

I may or may not have patronised Russian backed establishments and businesses, but it's extremely difficult to know as, for some reason, they like to keep a lot of their investments secret.

As for how Wetherspoons treat their staff, the pay is relatively good, training I've heard mixed reviews, but I've heard some pretty poor reports on how the staff are treat, including bullying, shifts messed around, leading to staff shortages and being very overworked. It used to be zero hours contracts, until they were shamed into it by campaigns and trade unions, very similar to Sports Direct, following a 6 month trial that was successful. When it came to the covid lockdown never forget that Tithead Tim initially offered no support to his workers, telling them to get a job at Tesco if they were short of money (these are people who are paid not much more than minimum wage remember) because he wasn't going to pay them anything until after the government furlough money came through.

Oh, he also said there should be no first lockdown because there was no evidence the virus was spread in pubs. He has managed to get his chain largely exempt from the latest strictest measures since pubs who serve a lot of meals can stay open. Funny that.

Ah right, so it didn't stop you actually going through.
Well we'll have to wait to see if your fishing expedition is fruitful won't we, seeing as I only learned of this a couple of months ago, well into lockdown. Do keep dangling your little rod though, I think I can see a wee twitch...

Can you tell me what the extent of Gibson’s support of this Government is?

Great. So at least it's given you food for thought.

Don't forget Cadbury's chocolate.
Don't want you inadvertently buying a bar if dairy milk.

Just the fact he donated to the Tory party recently.

There is a difference in making a donation to a local mayoral candidate, who may have a very good specific policy worth supporting, especially if he feels it will help his community football club. I have no doubt he is frustrated at the lack of progress and broken promises due to the infighting and incompetence of the Labour led Middlesbrough and East Cleveland councils. I can understand him making a donation on the understanding that a specific measure will be taken, especially since the Mayor is from the same party as that in government and the MP's are going to need said government to deliver or it will be decades again before this area gives them another chance.

Has he come out in favour of Boris, or Brexit, or general Tory policies towards public services, business etc etc? I haven't heard anything but your use of the phrase 'Gibson's support of the Government' makes me wonder if I've missed some things.

You must have missed his previous support of the Tories.

And his donation was to the Conservative Mayor, as opposed to mayoral candidate.

Which are the Labour led Middlesbrough and East Cleveland Councils?

Gibson's support of the Government-well, let's face it, you would not donate such a large sum if you didn't support them would you, despite you trying to argue a counter point.

Must have.

You mean other than his specific support for James Wharton in 2017, who he had previously slated along with the Conservative Government over the SSI disgrace?

So a support of a previous candidate, and large contribution to a Conservative Mayor. But you're right, it's not an indication of support in any way shape or form.
