Boro's European coverage vs Rangers'

I am not begrudging the press coverage Rangers have had because they fully deserve it given their brilliant run to the final, but how did our coverage compare? Especially with regards to the final?

I am just curious as I was one of the lucky ones to have been in Eindhoven so I missed the coverage back home.

Can't find any evidence of it being discussed in the House of Commons at the time on Hansard, but I've only skimmed the topic titles.

It's a different time now though.

Fulham got a lot more media coverage for their UEFA final in 2010 than what we did for ours in 2006. But to be fair, we got the plaudits more for our the run to the final, especially the way we got there, more than for the final itself. Understandably for the way it all panned out.

But yeah, the coverage Rangers are getting at the moment is off the scale compared to what Boro and Fulham got for their finals. Bigger competition now maybe? more prestigious?, it definitely gets more exposure now, and more media attention as a result.

I think a lot of the coverage is down to the fact the media were gearing up to report on all of the trouble with Rangers fans in Seville but it doesn't seem to have materialised. Probably disappointingly for the media.

I remember it being pretty well covered on Radio 5, not just on the sports programme, but through out the day, with frequent pieces on how the fans were preparing in Eindhoven, and how fans were preparing at home etc.

I don't think the Rangers coverage has been excessive by comparison.

If I remember correctly, in 2006 there was a lot of focus on the 'almost exactly 20 years since liquidation' aspect of our 'journey' to the final.

West Ham's run to the semi finals was on the next level though !
I think TV's all across the UK would have blown up if they'd got to the final..... embarassing !

Time has almost certainly dulled my memory, but didnt Arsenal get to the Champions League final the same season which took 99% of the media coverage at the time?

Only thing I remember (as I was there so didn't see the tv build up/post mortem) was reading/hearing some disappointment about Andy Townsend hammering us on the TV coverage for our performance in the final.

Can't say I've ever watched it (although I do have it recorded somewhere) but apparently he wasn't particularly complementary about us and spoke with no affection for the club at all considering he played for us. Like I say I didn't see it as I was too busy getting smashed and p*ssing in the street in Eindhoven (at those weird outdoor urinals!) as well as attending the match too.

Mind you it seems churlish to suggest we didn't get as much coverage when often our own attendances at the games in that run weren't great suggesting even our own fans lacked enthusiasm for the competition (admittedly I do think the fact they were played midweek made it more difficult for long distance fans to get back for the games with work or other commitments).

It is indeed. Look at the state of the House of Commons now to back then. These chancers try to attach themselves to any success, we see it here with Houchen too.
