Boro women

Geordies have released a number of players, including Georgia Gibson and Becky Ferguson who were on loan to us last season. Daisy Burt has also been released (she was on loan to us the season before). May see both back for Boro.

The women’s side is very low cost compared to the mens side however. The world record transfer fee for women’s players is £900k and wages are no where near the mens level.

Boro women were free for season ticket holders and kids and £5 I believe for over 18s. I believe our average attendance was around 3-400 per game.
Do Gold card holders get a free drink?

I think Gibson has high hopes for the Boro women and wants us to be in the top league. Our manager Mick has bought into the project and I don’t believe he would have done so if that wasn’t the aim.

In today’s football, I would say it’s much more realistic that Boro women could end up as a top side in the women’s game in England compared to the mens game. There’s no reason we cannot compete in the top division one day. It would be great in a few years to see some local ladies such as Jordan Nobbs and Beth Mead playing for us (even towards the end of their careers).
Boro's men's and women's teams are already in virtually identical positions in their respective pyramids.

That's not right for me either. It should be based on footballing ability only.
It is sad that men's non league football has many glass ceilings. The chairman of one Northern League club told me quite recently that winning the league would be disastrous for them because the additional costs of playing in the Northern Premier League could put them out of business.

It's not an entirely new concept, however. In the 1960s and 1970s it wasn't uncommon for leading non league teams to choose not to apply for election to the Football League because it would have sparked an exodus of their players, who wouldn't be willing to give up their day jobs to turn professional on Fourth Division wages.

Boro women are level 3 right now. Men are level 2.
That's true, but there are only 12 teams in each of the top 2 divisions of the women's pyramid (so the top team in the men's championship is 21st in the pyramid and the top team in the league Boro women have just been promoted to is 25th in the pyramid).

There’s also a lot less professional teams in the women’s game. So %wise the women are lower at the moment

Boros league for next season. Sheff United didn’t get relegated due to Blackburn dropping down so will remain in WSL 2.

Glad we managed to get promoted as this looks a difficult league next season with Blackburn joining. Not sure what’s happened to Barnsley? Doncaster also managed to stay up? Barnsley must have dropped out?

Georgia Gibson won’t be coming back as she’s signed for Chester Le Street in the league below after her release from Newcastle.

Boro have announced their retained list.

5 players have left following our promotion:

Laura Wareham
Jane Harland
Sharna Wilkinson
Fran Ward
Darcie Sugden Brooks

Wareham is probably the biggest player due to leave since she was our number 1. I did mention before that I had reservations about her being able to make the jump up to the next level.

Agreed, although she was probably one of the better keepers in the 4th tier. With some of the opposition keepers it seemed like just getting a shot on target gave you a 50% chance of it going in.
