Boro women

Not next year, but it may be necessary if we were to achieve promotion to maximise income from supporters and sponsors. I can see the new staff requirements and need to go fully professional (our players are part-time) making promotion from the 3rd tier a bit of a poisoned chalice to some smaller clubs.
Think I read Blackburn? Womens team has just turned down a promotion due to money

It isn't right for me that a club's chances of playing at a higher level is not based on their footballing ability but on their ability to pay players more money.
It's because the rules have suddenly been introduced that it seems that way. The same applies in the men's game, it just starts lower down the pyramid although I don't know if it's an actual obligation to be fully professional at say league 4 level or even earlier.

That's not right for me either. It should be based on footballing ability only.

The average was 703, lowest gate of 260+, pretty good going, obviously the average boosted by the Riverside gate, but still a decent average.

It's not that far short of Stockton's average gate to be fair, and well above Northern League averages.
I’m not sure they ever got 700 at Stockton but it will be due to the Riverside game.

I’m interested to see who we bring in this year. I think the core of our team (Packham, Towers, Boyes, Bell, Robson, Giles, Turnbull, Maxwell Mett and Elson) are definitely able to compete at this level and we have shown it with our ability to compete and beat teams in the cup last season. Gibson and Ferguson will go back to Newcastle after their loan and it was disappointing they never really got many goals at the Boro.

I would probably question our goalkeepers and would like to see the attack strengthened. Ruby Cook looks a good prospect in goal however.

I imagine they will play one game at the Riverside. Two of the bigger teams are Wolves and Sheff United (probably the favourites for the title as they have just come down from WSL2
Was it Wolves or Sheffield Utd who finished second bottom? They may retain their place in WSL2 to keep the numbers even.

Sheff United got relegated from Blackburn’s league. They may keep their place? Wolves just missed out on promotion to that league from the one we are in now. They will be strong next year. Blackburn were second bottom.

Saw this a few days ago. Disappointing that Wolves didn’t apply so would not have gone up either way.

That's exactly the scenario that I was envisaging in my post #740 and I'm sure Wolves would not be the only club thinking that way. A good question for the Gazette to put to Mr Gibson?

I think Gibson has high hopes for the Boro women and wants us to be in the top league. Our manager Mick has bought into the project and I don’t believe he would have done so if that wasn’t the aim.

In today’s football, I would say it’s much more realistic that Boro women could end up as a top side in the women’s game in England compared to the mens game. There’s no reason we cannot compete in the top division one day. It would be great in a few years to see some local ladies such as Jordan Nobbs and Beth Mead playing for us (even towards the end of their careers).

I agree with that, but would like to hear it confirmed given that the goalposts have changed since the start of the project. I'm sure the chairman of Blackburn had similar aims. My question is, does Gibson have the funds to finance a fully professional women's team given his losses with the men?
