Boro to wrap up payero deal this weekend - he’s on Teesside - gazette

I think Maja would be a shock, it didn't say a surprise which is the difference but I think when we've been told there is a big fee and wages everyone has assumed that we won't get him, but now that Muniz is out of the picture Maja fits the template of being young but with more experience

Martin Payero is on Teesside with Middlesbrough hoping to conclude the deal to sign the midfielder this weekend.

Payero flew into Teesside following Argentina's shock early exit at the Olympics and will have six more days in self-isolation as per Government rules.

But the highly-touted midfielder had already agreed terms with the club, passed a medical and held conversations with Boro boss Neil Warnock.

The deal had been held up by complex details with regards to the financial deal between Boro and Banfield, with Covid restrictions around travel making things more complicated.

But Boro are understood to have worked hard to find a solution to the complications, desperate to get Payero to Teesside to fend off any potential late interest.

After Payero's influential role in Banfield's run to the final of the Copa Diego Maradona, the 22-year-old courted the interest of River Plate and Boca Juniors, while one of the Milan clubs is also believed to have made attempts to sign him too.

Payero is on Teesside and Teesside Live understands Boro are just awaiting one final document from the Banfield side, that they're hoping to receive today, that would conclude the deal and make Payero a Boro player.

Bausor has been busy in recent weeks being dragged here, there and everywhere in attempts to wrap up numerous deals that the club are working on to bolster Warnock's squad for the new season.

One they have missed out on is Rodrigo Muniz, with the Brazilian striker opting for Fulham - with the lure of London playing a big factor in that.

Muniz is believed to have been on the club's radar for over a year now and serious attempts were made to bring him to the Riverside from Flamengo.

Boro were able to conclude a deal with the club when Bausor met with Flamengo representatives in Lisbon last week. However, at the same time, the player's agent is believed to have alerted Fulham to his availability.

And the recently-relegated side were able to flex their financial muscle thanks to their parachute payments to outbid Boro. As much as Bausor and Steve Gibson wanted the player, there are financial fair play rules to consider, and well aware that there are still more positions in the squad to fill this summer, Boro could ill-afford to match Fulham's late bid without sacrificing another area of the squad, which they were ultimately unwilling to do.

Excitingly though, Teesside Live understands that Boro are working hard to sign another striker - one they hope to make significant progress on this week.

The striker has been playing in Europe and has been described to Teesside Live as somebody who would 'shock' supporters if they do manage to pull it off.

Given the player's apparent stature, it will be a difficult deal to conclude, but Boro sources say the club are hopeful on that front.

Beyond that, Boro are expected to hand Sol Bamba a one-year contract after another impressive outing at Rotherham United on Friday evening, while they also hope to make progress on signing a winger this weekend too.

A second goalkeeper, a third striker and potentially a left-sided defender are also on the agenda, though if the winger in question is one capable of playing wing-back then it will negate that need. The third striker will depend on finances and could well be a late Premier League loan.

It's been a difficult summer for Boro with the pandemic and the financial restraints that come with that - not just Boro but all EFL clubs for that matter - but they continue to work flat out behind the scenes to give Warnock all the tools he needs to mount a promotion challenge.
