FINAL RESULTS OF BORO QUIZ - junos_boots favourite 90s-ish goals

Brought back some great memories watching the Bernie goals.
Here we go then
1sr. V bradford in the play off semi. Very tight angle
2nd. Third v Coventry. We all knew he could do it in the top division, and to get a hat trick just proved it. Plus he beat speedie to the match ball
3rd v villa in the zds cup semi final. We were on our way!

How can you chose the same 3 as other posters never mind junos
I have an idea but that consists of 20 goals off the top of my head

Bernard Slaven. The hardest of the lot. How do you choose a top 3 goals from one of our greatest scorers ever?

First the negatives. He got caught offside a lot. That is it

The positives. He could head. Surprising number of headed goals in that review. He could dribble, he could assist - and that left foot. If Beck had a left foot like a wand, Slaven had the Nimbus 5000. It was a broom it was so magical. I remember when I first saw Slaven - it was Fulham I think at Craven Cottage in the early days helping us to a very rare away win and realised we had one hell of a bargain.

To choose a top 3 have had to draw up a short list to pick from those hundred odd goals. So here is a severely curtailed short list of his best ones. First the spectacular goals.

Coventry City Away 1988-89 - could have chosen any one of his hat trick goals but the first. A deft flick by Rippers, Hammy helps it on and Bernie powers forward and unleashes a left foot spear into the far corner.

His third goal v Coventry C in that hat trick. Burke bamboozles their right back, crosses and Bernie meet it full on the volley to smash it high into the net.

A few weeks later Millwall at home collecting the ball from deep he moves forward and unless an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

That same season v Southampton at Ayresome and repeat and even better shot after a superb control of a loose ball again smashing an unstoppable pile driver into the top corner.

In 1989-90 his first of his two against Sheffield United at home - yet another thunderbolt from outside the area into the Bob end.

6-0 demolition of Leicester he scored the sixth, with incredible close control his swivel turn to smash the ball home from being tightly marked in the box.

Then there were the memorable goals, the ones that will live in the memory for their importance and the wild celebrations after them.

1987-88 Play off game v Bradford City - in the Holgate end. Ripley fires a shot in which is parried well by the Bradford keeper seemingly wide and safe but oh no. Bernie charges in like a man possessed and from a tight angle finds the other side of the goal which sent AP into absolute raptures and we were level.

1987-88 Play off Final first leg v Chelsea. 1-0 up courtesy of Trevor Senior in the first half we needed a cushion second and up popped up our man to oblige. Collecting th eball on the left he charged into the box and fired hard. The ball was saved but Bernie was quickest to react and smacked the rebound with his right foot into the net. Cue pandomonium

1989-90 Semi final Zenith Data Systems Cup second leg semifinal v Aston Villa. Poachers goal of the very best quality latching onto. loose ball in the box turning 180 degrees to fire high into the net

1989-90 v Newcastle. That last game nail biter. There first meeting a deep cross in the very first few minutes to meet it on the volley and steer the ball against the near post applying incredible spin on the ball that it comes out and spins back in again. Only Bernie's left boot could do that :)

in that same game his second and our fourth. Icing on the cake meeting a shot off the post with cool abandon volleying into an empty net and releasing so much tension in the crowd as we celebrated as though we had gained promotion.

1991-92. Old Trafford Semi Final League Cup against Man United second leg. 1-0 down and roared on by 8,000 Boro supporters, Ripley roasts Parker down the left wing and centres to the near post. Bernie is quickens to react and smashes the ball first time from close range into the near post. The Boro fans behind that goal went ballistic.

So my top 3

1. The first goal against Bradford in the play off semi final 1987-88. Collecting the ball very wide on the left following the keepers parry and finding an angle somehow to set us up on our way to play off glory

2. The first of his three goals v Coventry City at Highfield Rd 1988-89, taking the ball in his stride from Garry Hamilton and smashing the ball past Ogrizovic.

2. The Zenith Data Systems goal 1989-90 in the Holgate that set up our very first appearance at Wembley - the turn and shot in one movement.

This is an impossible task. I think there is more chance of me becoming the next Prime Minister than there Is of doing justice to the goals scored by the phenomenon that was Bernard Joseph Slaven. A true hero of mine in my mid twenties and early thirties.

What can anyone say or do that could even come close to defining just how important to our club this man proved to be. Brought in by a personal hero of mine, Willie Maddren. I am a big believer in fate. Bernies faith in himself was immense, just look at the way he joined us. Top Scorer with 31 goals at Albion Rovers. At 24 he chose the freedom of contract and wrote to clubs aasking for a trial. Willie was quick to react and brought him down to play in a reserve game. Baring in mind he hadn’t kicked a ball in months he shone and but for better service Willie said he could have had a hattrick at least. Willie wanted another look and he scored a brace in a reserve game. The rest is history. He was a huge part of the Phoenix rising from the flames. It was a marriage made in heaven. Fate was smiling on the Boro and Willie deserves huge credit and immense thanks.

Some of his goals were important, some spectacular, some mere tap ins, but the sheer joy he brought after what nearly was....... It is incredible looking back, hugely emotional times, he soon became a real hero, costing £25K In total. His wage was £240 a week. When you look at his quality then and his wage compared to what players get now who have nowhere near the finishing ability Bernie had, its frightening.

I can’t do him justice across all his goals, I really can’t. As such the biggest compliment I can give him is rather than dissect his goals and games up between how important one was over another or how great an individual effort was by him or for the team, I am just going to pick 3 based on what I consider the best hattrick I have seen by a Boro player, and I have seen some good ones over the years.

Although this wasn’t a big cup game, a play off or promotion defining game, it was imho a huge huge game at that time. Newly promoted Boro back in the big time, after back to back promotions, we had lost 5 of our opening 6 games only the barcodes and Wimbledon whom we had defeated earlier were below us, Coventry were high up the league early on. I feared another defeat, we were desperate for points. In context it was a big game. His hattrick at Coventry consisted of 3 superbly taking goals that each alone were worthy of being goal of the month. It helped make an opposition player who also scored a hattrick be the loser on the day. Added to that, he scored them against a giant of a keeper in Steve Ogrizovic (In those days).

In order of personal preference
1. His second. A beautiful pin point cross from the right (I’ve used atistic licence to ignore the slight deflection) to BJS perfectly positioned in the box, he caressed the ball gently steering it into the top left corner past the helpless keeper. It was a goal of sheer class, pure style and was spectacular to watch time and time again.
2. His third. Back to goal a slight swivel of the hips to volley into the top right of goal after superb work from (oops nearly) Burke. Wonderful timing skill and power.
3. His opener. flicked on by Rippers, BJS being played deftly in by Hammy to smash it high into the top right corner.

The best compliment I can give Bernie is a big THANK YOU FOR THE MEMORIES.

Great write up coluka my mate 👍

OK. That was a nice way to work my way through a bit of a hangover.

1. 18 May 1988 Bradford play off goal
2. 1 October 88 Coventry 1st goal
3. 1 October 1988 Coventry 3rd goal

Now for a nice rest for 45 minutes.

Zoo and Coluka have pretty much said everything that could and should be said about Bernie. Im not going to be able to add anything more. He did score some spectacular goals particularly in that first season in the top flight with Bruce. I cant choose between any of the three Cov goals at Highfield Rd as they are all as good as each other but Im going for the final one the left foot volley from the Mark Burke cross

1. Coventry City away. Left foot volley to complete the hattrick from Mark Burke assist.

2. Play off semi final v Bradford. That delicious goal from a very tight angle that led to the famous on the fence celebration.

3. His opener against Coventry. Taking Hamilton's pass in his stride and curling it around the keeper before he knew it.

You could probably run a ten day competition for Bernie alone. He scored important goals, tap ins and great goals as others have already described. I'm going to go for my personal favourites from memory

(1) ZDS Northern Final 2nd Leg 1990 - Typical Boro about to blow the chance for our first ever visit to Wembley, but up pops Bernie. A goal I think Rioch described as being one that only Bernie or Platt on the pitch could have sored
(2) His last goal I believe, in the Premier League and fittingly up against the Holgate against Man Utd in 1992
(3) Southampton (h) 1988/89. We had some high scoring home games and Bernie seemed to be able to just let fly from 30 yards out with his left peg to pull a goal out of nothing. Unfortunately not enough to keep us up in the end

As rightly pointed out by coluka, the late, great Willie Maddren brought in some excellent signings with Bernie right up there as good as any

His trial reserve match at home to Bradford when he scored 2 goals, Willie knew he had a diamond & once he left Ayresome Park in the night there would be scouts waiting in the cobbled streets on the otherside of the famous Boro gates who would whisk Bernie away to another club to get his signature & lost in our history forever, before it had even started
Willie tried desperatly to get hold of the then Boro chairman Alf Duffield to sign this player now, before he left the ground, he ordered the groundsman to lock up stopping anyone getting in, or Bernie escaping

Fortunatly for the mighty Boro & Willies judgement on what he seen on his performance won the day, agreed with Albion Rovers a £15k with an addition £10k, resulting in one of our best ever signings at a £25k, bargain
A great Boro servant who will be loved by fans young & old, a bit like John Hickton with fans who never seen him play still hold him in high regard

Last christmas while Bernie was auctioning one of his books my daughter asked to have her photo taken with Bernie & she never seen him play

He scored the 1st FAC hat trick, the 1st away & home hat tricks after liquidation, infact the 1st hattrick away fom home I'd seen was at Huddersfield in a 4-1 win, 1st top flight hattrick when he scored 3 away to Coventry since december 1980 when Hodgy scored 3 past Spurs, infact, unless im missing something, you'll have to go back to the early 40's for our last top flight away hattrick

My top 3 goals

No1 - 18th May 1987, this was a typical Bernie Slaven goal, acute angle, after the keeper had pushed aside a shot from Rippers & bang in the back of the net, his 23rd goal of the season, such an important goal, putting the mighty Boro one nil up & bringing the scores level on aggregate on the night, with the vast majority of the 25,868 fans in the ground going ballistic, Bernie doing his trademark celebration by jumping on the holgate fence to celebrate with the fans, my hearts beating even faster watching that goals again & again, what a goal, he showed his worth over & over again & more so that lovely, warm tuesday evening

No2 - 6th February 1990 scoring at the holgate end putting the mighty Boro in dreamland & dreaming of going to wembley when notching on Peter Davenports miskicked shot in the holgate at home to Villa in the ZDS NF 2nd leg, with Bernie having his back to goal, controlled the ball with his right, spun & put the ball in to the back of the net with his left & in the words of sky co-commenataor Ron Atkinson 'a worldy', it wa that good & set us up for an emotional, unforgattable night

No3 - 5th May 1990, its there, the deadlocks broken, Bernie has bagged the all important 1st goal at home to Newcastle in a 4-1 win, in a game we HAD to win & against a team who were hoping to win to go up, Bernie bagged his 20th goal of the season with that one, on the way to 21 goals scored in ateam that had struggled all season, remarkable

Its so hard to chose 3 but great looking back (y)

Otto his 1st & last Boro goals were at the holgate end, both in October & both games finished 1-1

Next on the list a controversial genius - wonder if they ever got the light fittings back in Hutton Rudby

Fabrizio Ravenelli 50 Appearances 32 goals (League 35 games 17 goals

This is the player that caused more headlines per minute played than any other Boro player. When he signed for £7 million, he had just scored the winning goal in a European Cup Final – the fact that he came off the bench to do it, probably explains why the Boro were able to get him.

There was much jealousy in the press due to Boro signing him, most stories either mentioned he was past it – he was 28 when we signed him, so I would say at his peak, or they mentioned his wages which ranged in the papers from £30000 to £70000 per week.

To say he started with a bang was an understatement, getting a hat trick against Liverpool. One of the funnier stories about him, was that Errea and Cellnet realised that in nearly every photo, he had his shirt over his head so they were not getting any exposure and as a result he had to wear a vest under his playing shirt with one of their names on!

It seemed that he fell out with everybody in his time at the club and it will be interesting to see how Beck treats him at the charity game that is to be played. He had a fight with Neil Cox on the morning of the cup final, had to go off after 23 minutes of the game, Cox did beat him out of the door after relegation though.

His goals did help us get to 2 cup finals that year and he is still the only Boro player to score at Wembley – Festa should have joined him but we were getting nothing in the cup final after our Hitler salutes of the Duchess of Kent – why is Mellor such a prat (see also supposed racist booing of Carlton Palmer on Juninho debut).

I was surprised at what a good reception, Fabrizio got on his return with Derby and he scored, but was over shadowed by Carlos Marinelli.

Yet again MFC have helped out by making this video of all of his goals available, including the Victorian era filming at Joker Park.

Two things about that video of Bernie’s goals. That laughing tune is now in my head. And 2 he didn't score many penalties. I know we didnt get many and Brian Laws took most of them.

1 Villa ZDS
2 Wolves first game of the season screamer
3 Leicester acrobatic volley after coming on as sub in the 6 goal home win.

The results are in.

Here are the words of junos_boots:

Bernie Slaven

Song – Take That and Lulu

Lulu showed up at the Riverside for their concert last year and I assume perform this song. She was obviously hoping to meet Bernie so she could discuss their connection!

The song list so far:

Paul Wilkinson East 17, Stay Another Day
Paul Merson Run DMC + Jason Nevins, Its Like That
Hamilton Ricard Emma Bunton, What Took You So Long?
Juninho McFly, Five Colours In Her Hair
John Hendrie Michael Jackson, Earth Song
Mikkel Beck Boy Zone, When The Going Gets Tough
Bernie Slaven Take That featuring Lulu, Relight My Fire

I have picked a goal that took us to Wembley for the first time in our history, the extra time goal in the second leg that put us back in front versus Aston Villa. It wasn’t the quality as such but just the emotion involved.

1st Place Feb 1990 v Aston villa https://youtu.be/ME2fOdNbi5M?t=106

Then the goal that brought the playoff semi final level. A ‘typical’ Bernie goal, following in on a shot / cross from Ripley and squeezing it from a tight angle. Then follows what seems to be the first recorded evidence of the Holgate fence celebration – and they still had those huge revolving spikes at the time!

2nd Place May 1988 v Bradford, https://youtu.be/wWc4ktSGRM8?t=17

3rd up is his stunning goal at home to Millwall in the 1st division. It is in the 80s, but it was such a good strike and was in a month where he scored 5 league goals and had me dreaming of Europe as we were well inside the top half of the table

3rd Place Oct 1988 v Millwall https://youtu.be/w5iNYJQN7DQ?t=165

A great goalscorer for the Boro at a very special time in our history.

Another goal that I loved, the second of his two goals, it may have been one of his easier finishes, but it ensured that we were staying up and Newcastle were not going up. Even the injury time at Bournemouth didn’t have me really worried anymore. The photo of his smiling face running along the Holgate End cinder track just after scoring, is one that I always remember fondly.

Now on to the results. I think that the next video is going to have to be for me - things can only get better.

Next up is Fabrizio Ravanelli.

Tomorrow is another golf day for me. Answers in by 12:00 noon UK time tomorrow (2 June 2020) please. Although it is likely that I will not get around to processing the results until at least an hour or two later. So you have a bit of leeway.

Fabrizio Ravanelli the marquee signing of 1996-7 and that gloriously sunny day in August 1996 when we faced Liverpool. To announce himself in such fashion is the stuff of legends. It had us all throwing our shirts over our heads. Hattrick in day one and the start of an amazing breathtaking season which he would score 16 league goals and 15 cup goals. The man was typically Italian with a flamboyant personality and with a Latin temperament to match. He was also controversial. Very critical of the clubs attitude and lack of professionalism he would show his frustration too easily but there was no doubting his commitment.

You could say he was a real homer as the vast majority - all but 2 of his tally of 16 league goals came at the Riverside. That said two of those rare away goals find my top 3. Both in the cup.

1 Derby County Away. FA Cup quarter final - no doubt my top Rav goal was the one that sealed our place in an FA Cup semi final for the very first time. Great play by Juninho to drift towards the Derby penalty area before laying it off left into the path of Rav to fire an unstoppable shot into the far corner and send us all into mayhem. It was the moment we beat the FAC QF hoodoo that had dogged us from the QF replay Cup defeat to Burnley in 1947. It banished that and Man U, Birmingham, Liverpool, Orient and Wolves.

2. He scored what still remains our only ever goal at Wembley Stadium. In 5 appearances Once again Juninho battled his way into the resolute defence of Leicester only for the ball to fall loose to Rav on his left foot 6 yards out. There was only going to be one outcome and as the ball bulged the back of the net the red half of Wembley went mad.

3. This is an odd third choice but it’s his penalty against Aston Villa at the Riverside. Needing desperately to win this game to stand any chance of staying up we went 2-0 up thanks to Rav and then Beck. The game was just full of drama and my nails were chewed to the bone. . Villa hit the post twice before second half goals from Ugo Ehiogu and Milosovic pulled the game level. That would been enough to send us virtually down. In injury time however Craig Hignett was dragged back on the right side of the area but inside the box and Rob Styles gave the penalty. Score and we could still survive. Miss and we are down. Some of the players and in the crowd couldn’t look as Rav stepped up to cool fire wide of Bosnich’s left to snatch the win. Celebrations were a mix of relief and ecstasy.
