OK. As mentioned in the last quiz thread. I am having a week off from running the quizzes. However junos_boots and myself will be drip feeding stuff here in advance of the next quiz.

There will be 10 rounds. In each round we have to guess the favourite goal by a player from the 90s. The goals might be from the 80s or 00s as well depending on when the player signed for us.

junos_boots will be searching out videos of his top 3 choices. We did a dry run on a player who is not featured in his 10 choices of players.

Here are some words about and 3 videos of Marco Branca that junos_boots has prepared. In 3 separate posts as you can only embed one youtube video per post.

People talk about cult heroes . Marco Branca 13 games 10 goals! (11 games, 9 goals in the league)

Don't think we would have gone up without him, just a shame what happened with court cases etc afterwards.

1) Feb 1998 The goal that will always mean Branca is a hero on Teesside in the best atmosphere I can remember for a full 90 minutes of a game

We have just sorted out an added bonus each day from when the quiz starts.

junos_boots will also be selecting a music video to publish at the beginning of his words each day.

To help us work around a minor issue to do with posting the videos of the footy.

Only a few days to go to the start of the next quiz.

Here is a bit of an introduction from our question setter, junos_boots:

"Here is my Boro history - hope it is not too long (or sad)

I started watching The Boro during Big Jack’s final season. I just about got to witness Sir John Hickton – and did go to his testimonial game v Sunderland. I then went with my dad to majority of home games through the rest of the 70s and early 80s. He then started to refuse to take me, so my attendance during Big Mal and Willie’s time was limited.

1986 - I moved away after liquidation and so missed the most exciting two years of my supporting life thus far. I only managed to get to the odd home game and a few in the south east.

Sept 1988 - I returned for a year to watch us get relegated and then attended University for three years, where I spent most of my grants / loans and overdrafts getting to as many away games as possible, culminating in Wolves away!

July 1992 - I return to the north east and watch us get relegated.

Sept 1994 - I was then offered a fantastic 1 year opportunity near Stoke and so ended up travelling hundreds / thousands of miles following most of the games in Robbos first season. However as I couldn’t get in the queue for tickets to the Luton game, I had to watch the last ever Ayresome game from the away end.

June 1995 - I then saw every game of the next 2 seasons as I was back in north east and of course we got relegated.

Sept 1997 - Moved down to south west (promotion and expensive travel), then after we got promoted I stopped travelling up to Riverside for as many games, but still saw 10-15 away matches a season.

Been back in north east since 2005 and for the first time in my life I was able to see a promotion season as a Teesside based fan in 2016 (gloss over the 2 relegations). "

Whilst looking through a load of Boro clips on youtube I found this from our successful Anglo Scottish cup run. Has anybody got any idea why the Boro are playing in knock off red T shirts?

Got that on DV, the point securing we topped the group & went to the next stage, no idea why we wore the red t-shirts TBH

To get us back into the swing of things junos_boots has suggested that we give people 2 days to give their answers to the first round.

So the name of the player for the first round will be published sometime tomorrow (Sunday 24 May 2020).

Please post your answers by no later than 12:00 noon UK time on Tuesday (26 May 2020). Note: an hour earlier than the last quiz.

Another tweak in this quiz is being made as on some days I might be playing golf. So I will not get around to processing the results until later in the day.

We are going to split up the posting of results for one round from starting the next round. To help people who are in different time zones.

So sometime tomorrow junos_boots will be publishing the name of the player involved in the first round here. Probably while I am out playing golf.

The plan is that he will publish the name of the player direct on here for each round at around 12:00 (or a little earlier) each day.

I will process the results from the previous day soon after 12:00 UK time on days I am not playing golf. Publishing the results early in the afternoon. The results will be published later on my golfing days.

Enjoy.

Spanishman asked me to put this up today

Here it is Day 1 in the new competition. As there has been a gap in the competition rounds we are giving people 2 days to get their entries in. Hopefully this will mean that people won't miss the start of the discussion.

First player I have selected is Paul Wilkinson.

Paul Wilkinson 196 games, 67 goals. (This is from who’s that team they call the Boro – Wiki says 65 goals)

Arrived with Willie Falconer on what seemed like a buy one get one free from Watford in the summer of 1991 with Putney going the other way. What a season those two were to have, turning a dispirited team into a premier league side within a few short months.

When he first started with that long hair and bicycle shorts, I though what the hell is this? I had laughed at him mercilessly the season before at Watford. We thrashed them 3-0 and I was stood in the Boro end next to a bloke in a Newcastle shirt (I didn’t know him but was amazed he survived without any grief).

It didn’t take too long for me to revise my opinion (he cut his hair early in Boro career). Just like Bernie Slaven, who was still there when Wilko signed, he didn’t get many (any?) screamers, and after reviewing pretty much his total back catalogue on youtube, he was willing to claim anything that passed anywhere near him as his goal! See goals credited to him v Spurs, Derby and WBA.

Remember post your three favourite Wilkinson goals by Tuesday 12 noon UK time.

Hope people enjoy looking back on a decade where Boro changed beyond recognition.

Thanks to junos_boots for publishing this. Unusually I had a tee time of 9:30 Spanish time today. As I was playing a match play match organised by the club. I normally prefer to tee off around midday. The match only took 3 hours (yes, I won - 2&1). So I am home earlier than expected.

Please can you submit your decision about the top 3 Boro goals of Paul Wilkinson (in priority order) by no later than 12:00 noon UK time on Tuesday 26 May 2020.

Looks like I might be spending the afternoon having a beer and looking at Boro videos.

Well spanishman, that doesn't sound too bad afternoon viewing TBH 😁👍

Just to give people a bit of a heads up. The reason I wanted to concentrate on the 90s is two fold

1 I saw more matches in that decade than any other

And

2 I have found all the Boro goals from that decade on youtube. Achieved by searching for the match rather than the goalscorer in the youtube search bar not googles or any other search engine.

Here we go

1. Paul Wilkinson sole effort against Newcastle at St James Park Boxing Day 1991 latching on to a clearance and in to a headwind ran half the length of the pitch calmly lifting the ball over Mags keeper Tommy Wright into the net

2. His first goal that same season in a 3-0 win against Newcastle at Ayresome Park. Taking a nod on to his thigh he swivels in one movement and smashes the ball into the Holgate net.

3. His winner against Man City FA Cup 3rd Round 1992 in a 2-1 win. Latching on to through ball off Any Payton's head he smashed a half volley into the top corner - just a minute after Kerny had equalised.

First one in. Congrats.

Perhaps a better way of searching out the goals videos. Suggested by junos_boots. With a little bit of linking info from myself.

Time for me to cook some tea for the missus now. So I will probably be doing this tomorrow now.....

You can use a site like I mentioned above to check the start and end dates of the period the player was at the Boro. Then you can use this info from junos_boots:

"Search for Middlesbrough and season eg Middlesbrough 1992-93 gives the wiki page for that season. Scroll down and you see all matches with scorers

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992–93_Middlesbrough_F.C._season "

So after looking at all of the relevant seasons you can compile a list of matches on youtube to watch.

From there you can pick your top 3 goals by the player.

I went to the Newcastle game mentioned without a ticket, so paid in the side terrace & when Wilko got the ball & charged half the length of the pitch with the ball I just clung on to the barrier & if he scores don't jump, lads around mecwere saying hes *#%%# & won't score, when the ball hit the net I was bouncing inside but so motionless or I woukd have been filled in
