Boro Parks to open Friday 8th

car parks to remain closed at stewarts park. problem is we are pushing ourselves another 3 weeks down the line if there are infected people travelling to the park with no symptoms and they come into contact with others. it will be madness

Peston is wrong. Recently he defended his decision to keep the parks closed saying that there were many other open spaces where people could walk and exercise, citing Fairy Dell and Hemlington Lake as examples along with Linthorpe cemetery. Well Fairy Dell and Hemlington Lake are fine for people who live in the south of the town but for those living in the centre it would require a car journey (and somewhere to park) Given that thousands of people who live close to Albert Park have no gardens, travelling by car to the said open spaces would cause mayhem and also render these places overcrowded in the present circumstances. The fact that he is opening Stewart Park without the use of the car park is telling, and makes it almost impossible for the families of Central Middlesbrough to visit.

His other suggestion - Linthorpe Cemetery - is plain stupid. Slightly smaller than Albert Park it has narrower pathways, making it harder to police, and hardly any open space where you can let the dog off the lead and throw a frisbee for him. With all it's woodland and nooks and crannies, not to mention many paths which are too small for vehicle access, the cemetery is far harder to police than Albert park.

Interestingly, Peston was interviewed on R4 this morning and signed off his interview by saying don't listen to Andy McDonald, all he wants is more power for him and his people. Meanwhile, I have just been for a run around Albert Park and due to its closure, the runners and walkers who usually use the park are relegated to the pavement around the outside which subsequently get quite busy with people stepping out into the road every few yards to avoid close contact with others. This is a far from ideal situation exacerbated by Peston's pig headedness.

Keeping the car parks shut will ease things. It'll still be full of nobbers with bluetooth speakers and cool boxes full of Carling ramming up the place. Leave them shut!

this makes no sense, why not at least wait till Monday, they might have at least seen the next stage of the roadmap and not opening going into a hot bank holiday weekend.....

What can possibly go wrong?
I really can't understand this. The UK has recorded two days of high death numbers after what appeared to be a drop. Why not wait until the national position has been announced on Sunday when it's likely that some restrictions will be lifted. All that's going to happen is that we'll see another surge in 10 or so days time from everyone gathering in parks this weekend.

Middlesbrough should have followed the other local authorities and reopened them when the rest of the country did.

I find this confusing. Are you saying we should have opened the parks earlier? If so I agree.

Probably, all that has happened is that they have delayed the rush to go to a park and the inevitable increase in cases by a week or two, so it makes little sense. There's loads of stories and photos of people continuing to use and gather in parks anyway, so the councils position was pretty pointless, in hindsight.

They must have looked at the weather forecast and thought, hmm maybe not Friday, lets wait until Saturday when the weather isn't as good.

Also, why is it confusing?

Another thing is the car parks aren't going to be open, as if that's going to dis-sway people from going. The roads, grass verges and new housing estate and sports village opposite Stewart Park will be packed to the rafters.

I may have misunderstood your post but when you said "The UK has recorded two days of high death numbers after what appeared to be a drop" I thought it was an argument for keeping the parks closed, but then you said "Middlesbrough should have followed the other local authorities and reopened them when the rest of the country did" which is an argument for the opening them.

I find this from Preston totally contradictory:

“Because we have a dense population we felt we were more likely to see a rapid spreading of the virus. But also because we have lots of open spaces scattered across the town which people can still access, we felt closing three parks was a tiny sacrifice to make in return for improved public safety and quite probably saving lives.”
