Another change that is probably due to the cost and effort to pay on the day at matches these days is that very few people now watch more than one top 4 league club regularly. I'm mid 50s and when I was young it was not uncommon for people to go the watch several different teams if your main team was away or not playing. No it's rare, so less incentive to have them on alternative weekends.

Must admit back in the 50s/early 60s I sometimes went to watch Pool or Sunderland if Boro away game was logistically/financially impossible to get to (and the Boro reserve game didn't appeal or was postponed)
