Boro managers DO NOT chuck the cups away

What's to not get?

Would you be happy if we beat Sheff Utd but Giles and Jones pick up injuries? Would you be happy if we don't have a win by September but the players are all fit as lops?
The lengths people are going to, imagining scenarios in which our lads are injured in cup games. What if Bola had got injured tonight? Or Forss? Why play anyone with a senior appearance to their name? What if four or five of them picked up an injury? Why risk any of them at all? Why don’t we revoke our licence and just not play football matches, just in case we happen to pick up an injury at some point.

As it happens, it appears nobody was injured tonight.

If be delighted as that a league win snd that is all that counts at this club anc if you think otherwise then your in for a shock.

Wilder is here to get promotion not compete in cups we don’t win

Wilder is here to win games of football. Karanka was the same. He was hired to win. He gave us two outstanding cup performances to remember. They’re both up there with the Brighton match in terms of his legacy and how we remember him. Not the dreary 1-0 wins over QPR or Peterborough or Ipswich. When he stopped winning games, he was sacked.

We’re Boro, we can’t pick and choose which games we win, which games are worthy of our fullest attention. Think of last season. When Wilder leaves, people will talk of his team’s cup run long afterwards regardless of whether he takes us up or not. We can’t be so arrogant as to think we can pick and choose our games.

Without the cups, our seasons are generally quite flat. Look at our promotion pushes and seasons over the past 25-30 years, they’re littered with cup runs alongside them. Winning games breeds confidence and makes everyone feel good.

We did in the early rounds or did you miss those. And I was one of yhe 3 thousand odd here to see it.
Middlesbrough: Schwarzer, Queudrue, Mills, Southgate, Cooper, Downing, Boateng, Doriva, Greening, Nemeth, Ricketts. Subs: Nash, Stockdale, Riggott, Juninho Paulista, Christie.

McClaren picked that team for a second round League Cup game at home to third-tier Brighton in 2003.

Awful team selection, should have played some more senior players to get some rhythm in the team.

2 tough games coming up now, if we go without a win in the opening 5 games of the season people will start asking questions.

They'd be asking questions regardless of whether we'd beaten a League One team or not.
The league results are the ones that matter.

Barnsley made 5 or 6 changes from the team that played on Saturday. Their fans were moaning before kick off about the selection.

It was a chance to give the fringe players a game. Just about every team in the competition does it.

Didn’t work tonight but easily could have. I honestly can’t believe people are getting worked up about it.

I don’t care what other teams did, I care what team our manager picks. You could see the moment the team sheets landed there were no goals in that team.

Not too disappointed that we're out of the cup but of course the worry is what this may now do to team morale - although in fairness many players who start on Sunday won't have played last night.

My biggest frustration is the fact that it was a missed opportunity to give Akpom and Forss decent run-outs.

Not sure why Watmore has suddenly become Wilders' main man to start with up front, considering he struggled for starts last season. The irony is we were calling for him to start more games last season, but now that many of us have accepted he should be used as an option coming off the bench, suddenly Wilder wants to keep starting him.

This season is tight! Our squad is paper thin. We need at least five new players and the lads that started tonight needed game time. Great if they had nicked it.. but tbh promotion needs to be priority and I don’t think we can afford the extra games along with the packed schedule.

if your fielding a very much weakened team which does not reflect the choices available then be upfront (as he was) and reduce admission by 50% to compensate. Charging full price to see kids and reserves is not fair game ...

I think and hope he was just keeping Akpom and Forss relatively fresh. If they both don’t start on Sunday I would be very shocked.

I found it hard to get dissappointed about last night, its a depressing fact of modern day football but clubs like us have no chance in cup competitions now. Also, the championship is a war of attrition and being out of the cup might help us in the long run.

Saying that I do agree with you in some respects Viv, last night has increased the pressure on Sundays game now and if we lose there the start will look even worse.
