Boro in “advanced talks” with Diedhiou

From the Bristol Post today:-

"There has also been growing disillusionment within the fanbase over the nature of his performances, with the Senegalese lacking impact and almost becoming the symbol of the general apathy within the team - particularly in Wednesday's 2-1 defeat to bottom-of-the-table Wycombe.

Pearson has questioned the commitment of certain individuals, without naming them, with Diedhiou an obvious suspect given the striker is out of contract in June 30 and has shown little inclination to sign a new agreement."
Sounds familiar...

If he comes, it’ll be strange seeing a centre forward making a nuisance of himself and scoring goals with his head.

Gone right off him as a signing given how he's performed since January.

If he won't try down there, he's liable to end up doing the same thing up here eventually.

Gayle was laughing when he missed a good chance a couple of weeks back - so he'd be popular on here....
And for me that's part of the reason football is the way it is these days.
Footballers forgetting why they play the game in the first place. As a kid it was for the fun and enjoyment of the game. At a professional level it's all about scraping a win, no matter the the amount of pressure you put on yourself.
Change that mindset and teams are bound to me more successful when players are allowed to revert back to playing the game for fun and enjoyment instead of the threat of losing a their job over their heads constantly. Brazil are a great example of this.

For the record I'm not a fan of Britt.

He's done a Britt. That's not our issue and will come in fired up and wanting to impress.

If you had asked Bristol City fans about him prior to Xmas they would be raving about him. He didn't sign a new deal and its run down going through the motions. Why bust a gut or get injured in a side playing for nothing?

I have seen him a few times (especially last season) and he's a unit he's pretty skillful. I think he's a great addition and champo ready.

I imagine he's going to get 10-15 goals at best. It's what else he brings that we've been missing. No point signing Dwight Gayle as we don't play a system that could accommodate him and even if we did he wouldn't get the chances he needs.

We had a 20min snippite of how a target man improves us on Saturday. He won nearly every header at 18. It's something we've been crying out for 3 years (we needed a decent Rudy).

I think its a great signing. Also he's apparently been chatting to a prem players club and agent and wants that tied up quickly👍

He's scored 16 goals with his head in the last 4 seasons, Assombalonga has scored 11, and Assombalonga has been dropped for the majority of this season.

I sadly don't think there's that much of a difference in their heading ability.

Given previous mistakes I would say one of the main qualities we need is a forward who will run through a brick wall for the team.
Any doubts over the player playing us off against other clubs to get a bigger wage and we should steer well clear.

I have mixed views about this lad. Is he better than our striker options this season ? Yes I believe so. Is he going to be a talisman striker to improve us to challenge for promotion? Not sure. I guess nothing is guaranteed.

Agreed
Be interested to know how many he's scored season by season
I think he got 13 (in 28 starts), 13 (in 35 starts), 12 (in 29 starts), and 8 (in 23 starts), total 46 goals in 115 starts

Compared to Britt 15 (in 32 starts), 14 (in 28 starts), 11 (in 27 starts), 5 (in 19 strts), total 45 goals in 106 starts

Similar goalscoring record, the difference is what does Diedhiou contribute beyond the goals? I think he is much bigger and more powerful, 6 foot 2 and pretty solid, he can win headers, offer a threat from crosses, long balls, and getting on the end of McNair free kicks and corners.

I think he is much better suited to being a target man than Britt, although with a lack of mobility and pace, you need to get accurate balls up to him.

He's a better dribbler than Britt too. But I don't see him running in behind and scoring, but then britt only seemed to do that 2 or 3 times a season.

Being such a bit unit, he seems to gas after 65mins, or struggle to perform three times in 8 days. If he signs and we expect him to play sat-wed-sat for the full 90, I think he would struggle. But then Britt gassed after about 30 mins and couldn't perform for a full game, so Diedhiou is definitely a step up.

He just need him to score a good 15 goals next season im sure he can do that and he’s free not £15m .
One boxed ticked imo now get the rest in ASAP ideally score the euros start

That's a fair point, to be honest.
Even if he scored slightly fewer goals than Assombalonga in his time here, he's still virtually guaranteed to be a better signing for us as he's not attached to a huge fee.

Now (don't laugh) but Britt is actually surprisingly good at scoring with his head. Quite a lot of headed goals for a relatively small guy.

Where I expect Diedhiou would be a step up is winning flick-ons and holding the ball up.

He might not score much more headed goals, but I would expect him to be more of a nuisance in terms of contesting high balls and set pieces.
