Boro close in on Ben Gibson

Excellent at this level. Has seen that the grass isn’t always greener and wants to come back and is presumably willing to take a pay cut to facilitate it. Knows the club, knows the area. Probably has a point to prove to those at Burnley/wider afield who have written him off, so is likely to be hungry. Could probably go elsewhere - presumably clubs better off than us financially will be aware he’s available and interested, so if he comes it’s possible he’s turned down bigger fish. What’s not to like? Strengthens the spine of our team by a significant amount straight away. Absolute no brainer IF the money is right
 
He was excellent at this level under Karanka, I'm struggling to recall him looking anything other than a standard champo centre half under Monk & Pulis before leaving?

Maybe I'm judging too harshly based on the stinginess of the defence in the Karanka champo years. I also suppose, to be fair I wasn't even sure what formation we were playing at times under Monk.
 
He is more mobile than the vast majority of Championship centre halves, but still physically strong both on the ground and to some extent in the air. He did struggle under Monk and was less protected, looked a bit more his own self under Pulis. For example in the play offs semis we kept it tight.

Did anyone look good under Monk or Pulis in that first season? All the players that did well in the promotion season regressed so I think it says more about Monk. ulis at least had the defense working well in his second season after Gibson left but that first season was still a bit all over the place. Gibson managed to still look good under Agnew in the PL so I'd be confident in him still being a good player at this level.
 
Pundits largely said he was our one outstanding player in the disastrous Prem season under Karanka. He got in the England squad on the back of that season. He'd be class in the Championship. We've been playing Howson, Shotton, Friend... We'll be lucky to get Gibson back.

He was very average in the championship. Ayala was a huge help and when he had his annual six weeks off, it was noticed. Gibson surprised me in the Premier League but he had a torrid start at Burnley and hasn’t really played since.
Still be convinced.
