Boris Johnson cycle ride

Boris Johnson and his government in muddled, mixed messaging shock!

Featuring making rules up as they go to conveniently cover something they just got caught doing.

If only Johnson acted like the adverts say and behave like he has the virus, then maybe he would have chosen to stay at home rather than drag a security detail along with him to park 7 miles away.

He's a brave man cycling in London... Its like whacky races watching cyclist's dodging buses and cabs etc.

They rule the road even more than usual😂

Can people not see that this isn't about whether he spread the virus, its about quotes like this:

“It is OK to go - if you went for a long walk - and ended up seven miles away from home. That is OK, but you should stay local."

The government have now clarified, unwittingly, that 7 miles from home is fine. At least they've clarified it I suppose, even without meaning to. So literally everyone in the country could go 7 miles from home tomorrow and every other day during this lockdown and have no reason to feel they've done wrong.

The problem with any ruling that has no fixed definition such as local is open to individual interpretation, a really simple clarification of exercise should begin and end at home for all walkers, joggers and cyclists gives absolute clarity on what is acceptable or clear parameters of what constitutes local, as at present I’m unclear on what I can and can’t do and I’m sure others are the same, definition decreases deaths.

7 miles is nothing on a bike, hardly worth going out if your doing much less than that, hopefully it makes him realise just how daft his own rules are.

Rules shouldn't need clarifying as people shouldn't have to worry about finding somewhere safe to exercise. Surely its safer to drive further to somewhere less busy than go to the local park which is packed? But under these rules that would likely come with a £200 fine.

I go for 5-6 mile runs. I hardly see anyone and run a safe distance from anyone on pavements etc. I imagine some of these cyclists on a weekend do 30-40 miles or more.

I don't think Boris cycling 7 miles is a super spreader. I get some people think exercise is a walk around the block but many gym bunnies have already had so much taken away.

I’ll probably do 25-30 miles on a weekend ride in lockdown or it’s not really exercise. If I went out for 7 miles I wouldn’t break a sweat.

Thought as much. I have mates who do ridiculous distances on bikes (30-40 Mile +) on a weekend.

7 miles on a bike would take no time at all and probably not even seen as a workout to a cyclist.

The majority of stick in the media is fit political gain rather than being so annoyed he broke the rules. I imagine 90% of folk who've had a pop have broke a rule at one time or another.

It's the same with footballers. I imagine many visited family in Tier 4 over Xmas but I'd like to think they weren't stupid enough to stick a photo on intstergram 😂

There isn't a problem this is another non story being hyped for political purposes
It IS a REAL story for everyone.
Its another "do as I say - not do as I do".
Can I go on a 7 mile cycle ride and say "the PM does it" if my local coppers stop me and ask me why I am not exercising "local"?
What about the two friends who were mobbed by coppers for travelling 6 miles?
You need to shake your head.

Public figures come out with "stick to the rules" - but the Government dont specify ewhat they are!
"Common sense" is not a clinical directive - what is "local" ? [for example].

UK police to get tougher on COVID lockdown rulebreakers

LONDON (Reuters) - British police will get tougher on those who flout rules aimed at stopping the spread of COVID-19 and stricter measures could be brought in, the country’s top officer and the minister responsible for policing said on Tuesday.

Hit by a new highly transmissible strain of the coronavirus, Britain is battling a surge in new infections, hospitalisations and deaths. In parts of London, one in 20 people are now thought to have the disease.

The capital’s police chief Cressida d*ck, the country’s most senior officer, said officers would take tougher action to enforce lockdown rules amid concern that some people were continuing to ignore measures to limit social mixing.

“It is preposterous to me that anyone could be unaware of our duty to do all we can to stop the spread of the virus,” d*ck wrote in the Times newspaper. “We have been clear that those who breach Covid-19 legislation are increasingly likely to face fines.”

Policing minister Kit Malthouse said the government could consider bringing in even stricter rules if the numbers relating to infections and hospitalisations showed action was necessary.

“If we’re going to get through this in good shape, and hopefully make sure that this is the last big lockdown of the country, it’s very important that we all stick to the rules,” he told Sky News.

“If we’re going to make sure that this is the last lockdown ... we all need to stick by the rules and take it really, really seriously and unfortunately we haven’t seen that in some parts of the country from a minority of people who are frankly letting the rest of us down.”

It's not that bad. They've done a lot to encourage cycling. I used to cycle through London every day

Health Secretary Matt Hancock was asked at Monday's Downing Street press conference whether travelling seven miles for a cycle ride was within the rules.

Mr Hancock said: "It is OK, if you went for a long walk and ended up seven miles from home, that is OK, but you should stay local.

"It is OK to go for a long walk or a cycle ride or to exercise, but stay local."

So there we have it. 14 mile, 5 hour walks are acceptable (y)
And why wouldn’t they be? You are highly unlikely to spread the virus walking

The issue is that no one knows if Johnson has broken the rules or not and this shows that we need better clearer definitions of what we can and can't do, I believe these things are kept deliberately vague to give people wriggle room although the Cummings situation shows that even clear and obvious breaches will be swept under the carpet to suit. 10 months in and communication flaws that could be forgiven at the start are still being repeated. People are quick to berate those they see as breaking the guidelines whilst looking at defending those that have introduced such opaque and vague definitions.

I don’t think the issue is the exercise. It’s more Matt Hancock saying the police were right and then saying it’s alright to walk 7 miles away from home

this government confuse the message trying to defend themselves and their policies

I agree completely with this. The rules are being kept vague so those with the clout can argue against them. It's appaling of this government to do this. Essentially risking lives so they themselves have an out

Not really.
There's a difference between walking 7 miles from home and driving 7 miles to have a walk.

Nobody in authority has the brains to state what is the realistic radius from your home is local, for exercise I would consider a 10 mile radius as reasonable.
