Less than 24 hours after watching the breathtaking and futuristic developments springing up in Manchester, courtesy of BBC2's Manctopia programme, we get hit with this devastating but far from surprising news. Everywhere else seems to be building upwards while this area is left to stagnate with nothing more ambitious than boring, low-rise, extended portakabins.

For those of us old enough we remember how hi rise was the wonder of the 60s and then the vertical slums of the 70s I would far rather see a lo rise development and the Old Town Hall restored as a centre piece of the new town rising again from the old heart of Middlesbrough.
Verical can mean private space. No entry. Exclusive. Elitist - in far too many cases.
