Saying their members cant produce CO2 without a pay rise and having the government shake the magic money tree to help them get a pay rise!
Oh, no, have I got that wrong.
...makes me so angry, if the firm cant make a profit do a compulsory purchase on the whole plant. F**k them they dont deserve to operate having put food supply in such danger, but no! Its the owners ! Pay them money to restart fertilizer production.
Am I the only one who is fuming about this co and the govts response. Jeez

Yeah fcuk the workers……as long as you get your Christmas dinner eh!

I'm very sensitive to people being at cross purposes. Stems back to sitting with my elderly parents who both had hearing aids but never wore the bloody things. They used to argue whilst agreeing with one another. 😖

Wood hall, I was being ironic, juxtaposing the position of the way a union would have been viewed if they had “ down tooled” and risked 60% of a vital resources production.
sorry for being vague

To explain what?
This firm threatens to cease production of fertiliser and so ceasing production of 60% of a vital constituent ( CO2)of the food industry and so the govt falls over themselves to subsidise them. More public money into private hands
If it was a union saying the workers could not live on present wages and so would stop working as of next week , could you imagine the comments from this govt?

CF Have shut the plants down because of the astronomical price of Natural Gas - totally impractical to operate a chemical complex when the cost of the main raw ingredient makes the plants run at a massive loss - presumably you were aware of all that when you posted though?

Could you post a link to where the unions are making this statement "Saying their members cant produce CO2 without a pay rise " so I don't have to bother searching for it?

The Govt have offered to subsidise the cost of Natural gas to allow the plants to restart. No one has forced them to.

CF have not put the food chain in danger - it is the companies who are totally reliant on using CO2 and don't have any contingencies for dealing with a shortage. That and a number of other things such as a shortage of HGV drivers, imports from Europe etc etc which are nothing to do with CF

Can you explain how the British Govt could make a compulsory purchase order on a foreign owned business and then run it at a profit when the original owners can't?

Yep I read it was entirely down to the spiralling cost of gas which made production unsustainable. The country can’t afford to see 60% it’s CO2 production stop so as it is a private company they only thing the government can do is bail it out (for 3 weeks I understand). The other thing of course was to remain in the EU procurement scheme but that went with you know what.

The economics of this is interesting which I don't know.

If I was running the CF Industries business I would increase the price of CO2 by a significant amount and explain to customers the exact reasons for doing it. Then the customers could decide to pay it or move on. Coca Cola probably produce a bottle of Coke for around 15p of which maybe CO2 is 1p, so doubling the price is puting 1p cost on a bottle of Coke, probably ends up 2p on the retail price. The main cost of a bottle of coke is distribution, marketing and running a large prodcution facility opposed to ingredients. There are also large profits made by all in the chain.

Also why can't CF raise the price of fertiliser?

Sorry, my joke was way over your head, I’ll keep it simpler next time.
The point is, whats more important to the UK ? satisfied US shareholders or satiated UK subjects, some time profits isn’t the be all and end all, the bi product of fertilizer produced a cheap form of CO2, makeing it unprofitable to produce as a primary product.

Ref Restricting supply

Doctors unions control the supply of new doctors in the UK, but its not called a union when its middle class professionals its called the BMA.

Many NHS consultants work part time so restrict their labour to the NHS and allow them to do lucrative private medical practice as well, its called professional practice when its consultants and you call them Mr. not Dr.

You’re spot on with the sentiment, it’s just that the OP had no meat on the bones so it was if people who’d only seen the headline came in halfway through the conversation.
