Black Lives Matter

Did anyone see that video doing the rounds on twitter?
A white lady in America addressing what looked like an audience of white women discussions racism. Looked to be around a thousand in the audience.

She asked them twice...
‘Would you please stand up if you would trade the rights you have for the rights black americans have’?

None stood up

Personally I could never guess what it's like to live life as young black man. The more you think about it the more stressful it must be.
These young men can literally be stopped and questioned about being shifty purely because of their skin colour. I can't begin to imagine how that feels, feeling like you are constantly being judged by the authorities.

And not just the authorities. Imagine not knowing if you are welcome in any particular social setting. Are people going to talk about you when you leave the room? Is the pub across the street welcoming or will everyone go quiet when you walk through the door. It's a daily battle.

And mote recently we have an emergence of the hard right, not least here and in the US, so we shouldn't be surprised to see the events of the last few days - this point was always going to come.

I agree, and the same can be said about the hard left, i.e. Antifa and The BLM Movement, who are causing more problems.

Did you watch the video Rico. I'm only 69 so I only go back to Martin Luther King ,what happened to hin, Tommy Smith and his black power salute, Cassius Clay chucking his gold medal off the bridge. We are talking about an enslaved people not only in USA but here as well. We are living off their back breaking work. What has changed over the years. Nothing, black people are still being regularly murdered in the street. Yes some people are overreacting.... Or are they.

Neither Antifa, which is not a real organisation, but a loose coalition of Anti-fascist groups nor Black Lives Matter are hard left groups. Trump and his cohorts try to portray them as such. If Black Lives Matter is such a danger why would one of the biggest hospital groups in the New York metro area ask its staff to turn out to show solidarity?

The statistics on the races that have been shot by police don't tell the whole story on their own, just like the races in prison etc. The major factor of being in prison and having contact with police is economical. The poorest demographic will have a much higher percentage of black people than the richest. This means they are more likely to be involved in crime etc.

The fact that there is any talk about which race gets shot the most by police is ludicrous and shows the stupidity of the gun culture of America. Police should be there to protect, nobody should be killed by the protectors. I don't think the police are trusted in America. It seems that they are seen as legitimate targets and nobody questions that a criminal or a police officer was killed (there were over 100 police officers killed last year in the US)

Racism is obviously still a problem in the US and due to profiling black men are unfairly treated. This happens to other groups as well, there and here but it isn't always racially motivated. Muslims are treated as suspected terrorists, black people as criminals, young lads in trackies as trouble etc. This is unfortunately because profiling works, the byproduct is a lot of false positives but police get blamed when these people aren't caught before they commit their crimes.

It's hard to understand it without being in their shoes I suppose but a lot of it is caused by the economics. It seems to me that in the main black people are treated fairly when they are in college, professional jobs etc but having the opportunity to get those positions is difficult because they are much more likely to be from a deprived background. Does society cause black people to be the poorest because it's racist, or keep them being the poorest or is it similar to here where the poorest will always be the poorest and race doesn't come into it other than coincidentally?

Someone mentioned the left being anti-racist but I don't think that political leanings play a part in race other than outwardly racist people tend to be labelled far right. In general I don't think those people are political at all. I doubt that in society there is more racism on either side of the political spectrum. The professional protestors that occupy the far left might just make it seem that way but the rest of society is probably quite balanced.

Rico
The FBI declared antifa as zero risk to the USA on the same day Trump sought to make them a terrorist organisation.
As for the BLM causing more problems - wow.

More problems than having the life squeezed out of you by a knee on the throat. All because you are black?
Again, and again and again.

..and still happening.

Have a look through #bluefall on twitter. What is happening in America RIGHT NOW is not being reported on the news correctly.
This hashtag is a prime example of social media being a good thing. Some truly disgusting things I've seen on there this afternoon.

And please remember, there are lots of sections of society in this country who are on edge wether it be because of racism or other things. I fear it's only a matter of days before it kicks off here.

Of course black lives matter, but perhaps this girls parents should do some research and teach her about the BLM movement, where they take their inspiration and how they are doing more harm than good to society. They are encouraging division, not unity, and they (and Antifa) have hijacked a horrific murder and turned it into an excuse for violence, damage and more deaths.
nonsense

One of the more chilling images to come out of the recent days, in many ways, especially given the Lincoln Memorial's iconic place in US civil rights history (site of MLK's "I have a dream" speech, among others).
