I think the Americans have seen the Wrexham documentary and think they can do the same but have tried to jump some steps on the pyramid. Makes more sense as a business, less so as a documentary. If they think that then they don't understand English football. The problem they have is scale, and Wrexham will hit the same problem if they make it as far as the championship. In the National League, and even in L2, there is very little money being spent so the amount of money needed to spend your way out of the division is fairly low. Last season in L1 there was Ipswich, Sunderland, Sheff Wed, Derby and other big clubs with spending power. I don't think Reynolds and co have the cash to outspend those clubs. They are rich but they aren't multi-billionaires with bottomless pockets. They also have to comply with FFP. They will continue to have success until they are in the smae place as other teams with their spending power and then they will only have success the old fashioned way (good recruitment, management and a slice of luck).
The championship is even more difficult. Teams with parachute payments, teams like Leicester and Saints selling players for £50m is just so far beyond what the rest are able to spend that it doesn't matter how rich the owners are. They can't outspend the competition. It's not impossible to get promoted with a smaller budget, just look at Luton for that example, but it is unlikely that a team is going to be able to spend enough to guarantee promotion. In this league that would be £100m+.
