Binns and The Crown - Have Your Say on Their Future Uses

The Crown could be utilised similar to Box Park at Wembley for a permanent Orange Pip market type situation. Pop up food & drink establishments with a small stage for music/comedy. Or a Ghetto Golf place similar to Newcastle, although not sure on the longevity of that.

Cleveland Scientific Institute was gonna be like the Deaf Institute in Manchester. Cool club venue. The council wouldn’t aloiw the licence, they didn’t have the building listed to it was sold and demolished.

The Odeon would have made a fantastic O2 academy type venue. Again the building wasn’t protected, served by the lowest common denominator and demolished.

The North Riding Infirmary a centrepiece building on the gateway into town. Demolished and replaced with some plastic clad monstrosity. ALDI

Python Properties bid in excess of what ALDI had offered for the land, they said they wished to build a mixed use development with offices, homes, a museum and a coffee bar.

That would have been good.

First two buildings on your list were demolished by the same company.

My euro millions dream (one of many) was to purchase the crown and make a music hub with a recording studio, drop in music lessons and workshops free to everyone. Free practice space for bands, open mic nights, dj sets etc. The only condition is if you make it you come back and give some of your time to others.

The design and some of the features are inspired by Jack Whites 3rd man record shops, especially his recording booth (like a photo one) that produces a vinyl record in a very short space of time.

Alas its a pipe dream as I don't put the lottery on.
Neil Young released an album recorded in the booth

If was Faulkner who owned them before (the guy who owns the Empire) he was messed about by the council. He sold on to Mandale Properties who demolished the two buildings overnight claiming structural collapse over the course of a weekend> The council did nothing to have these buildings protected. Mandale wanted to build two huge skyscrapers for student accommodation. The student accommodation the threw up in Stockton looks dreadful.

It's not the developers fault, they are what they are. The council has a lot to answer for and the decisions that they have made on behalf of Middlesbrough have been shocking. Giving away all the housing stock, giving away the airport, then buying it back, part of it back, covering the loses at least. Utter madness.

Not one of them with any sense.

Yes, M'bro council wanted their hands on The Empire to turn it back into a theatre.
Faulkner said fine, I'll turn the Scientific Institute building into a club.
The council said no, as there were already too many clubs on that stretch (we would have been losing a big club and gaining a smaller one so that was nonsense)
Faulkner then sold the SI and it got knocked down.
The council still didn't get The Empire.
Madness.

I'm willing to bet a few bags of Haribo and a pack of Heineken 0.0 that the two buildings will be turned into one of the following.

Student accommodation.
Offices.

In 1855, the central Spanish government approved a plan by architect Ildefons Cerdà for Barcelona

Converted into residential units.

Dundas House, Dundas Street
Four floors have been converted for office use.

Sylvan House, Woodlands Road
The building has been converted from office space to student accommodation.

Centre North East, Albert Road
Current proposals call for a mix of residential and leisure uses, including restaurants, a bowling alley and possibly a sky bar.

Melrose House, Melrose Street
Potential sale and use as business premises.

Commerce House, Exchange Square
Plans for a serviced business centre development.
Building that housed Kalinka bar, at Exchange Square
Plans for ground floor retail and business lounge for the railway station, with open plan offices on upper floors.

St James’ House, Albert Road
Current proposals are to convert the building into a mix of residential, leisure and commercial office space.

Gurney House, Gurney Street
Vacant - previous proposals for a casino and hotel have not progressed.

Church House, between Bedford Street and Grange Road
The council says that previous discussions about converting the imposing office block into flats haven’t progressed. In September last year, developer Jomast said it was looking to extend its planning permission to provide 87 more flats in the building. It already has permission for 77.

New Exchange Buildings, Cleveland Street
Vacant property.

It is not the same council as it was then. It was Ray Mallon very much in charge at the time. People vote and councils change in direction. Personally I think some of your info is accurate but this is an opportunity to have some say in the future use of two town centre buildings.

The best idea was for Middlesbrough to have a Cultural Quarter -

We've been there before. Ray Mallon was just one man. For every Listed Infirmary Building demolished against the wishes of the town there will be a listed Dorman Long Tower demolished. An opportunity to have some say.. ever diminishing returns. A thought of a whisper of a maybe. Whether it be Mallon, Preston or Houchen at the helm.. they will dictate how our money and property is used. It will be to their advantage and for the benefit of those close to them.

The greater good? Nah, it's a quick flip, a smash and grap, This town will continue in it's terminal decline with a pattern of behaviour that has been repeated throughout the years. Short term private gains at the expense of the general populace. No plan, no foresight.

These buildings didn't just spring up over night, the issues that we have in the town are not a recent phenomenon.

The folks at the top are at best greedy and selfish at worst.. ignorant stupid or corrupt.

The starting point of this thread is an opportunity to have your say on the council website about a proposal to get government funding for community usage of two of the town's iconic buildings. If you follow the thread you can agree or disagree with the proposals or make your own proposals.

It doesn't matter what "the people" say They will do what is best for them and ££££

Have you read the link? The proposal is to ask for government levelling up funds to convert the old Binns building and Crown/ABC building for future mixed and community use. I put the link on here because I thought people might like to know what was happening and possibly get involved.
The Crown has stood derelict for many years now - a real blight on the area. The worry for many people was that Binns would have a similar fate. The fact there are actually plans to give these buildings a future is surely a step in the right direction.
At present there are big plans being carried out with funding for revitalising the area around the railway station. This process was started several years ago under the labour council and is being continued under Andy Preston. Funding has been successfully brought into the town from Historic England. So, national funding that we would not otherwise have tapped into. Go and have a look at Exchange Square before the next home game to see how much of a difference has been made here.

Personally I think it would be a great use of the money to secure the active future of these two buildings. As pointed out, too many iconic buildings have been lost.

@fmttmadmin - If the council genuinely care about what "we" think should happen to these buildings, they should set up an official vote/poll, and actually do what is voted for.

Everyone in this thread is 100% right. What's the point of even discussing it when they'll ignore what we want and do what's best for themselves financially anyway?

We would end up with two massive B&Ms

It's up to local people to apply to get buildings listed, not just the council. It's the reason Billingham Forum is still standing and John Whitehead Park is still a park and not a diluted down sports centre without an ice rink.
