"You can have your say now on a major Middlesbrough Council funding bid to breathe new life into The Crown and House of Fraser buildings.

The Council is finalising a bid to the government’s Levelling Up Fund and a consultation to gather the public’s views is open until July 3.

The draft bid details how the Council would buy and redevelop The Crown, a key town centre site with a rich history as the ABC Cinema and a bingo hall before its days as a nightclub.

Funding would also be used to convert the House of Fraser building so it could accommodate several uses over its expansive floor space.

The consultation asks for views on the draft plans, other alternative suggestions and potential uses for the two key sites."

The consultation can be viewed online here. It closes at midnight on July 3.

and still they continue to build new places out side of town. WTF is wrong with this town? Lots of buildings empty, but let us continue to build places we don't need!

What do you mean?
I walked today from near the transporter down to Albert Park and the number of shops closed was unreal, however on the other side (Over the border side) of the A66 they are building several new buildings. Why?

Here's a suggestion, make incentives to persuade the shops in the Cleveland Centre to move to Binns and Debenhams and then knock the CC down. Rebuild the Holiday Inn at the Linthorpe Road end and put a huge square out front to link up with centre square.
I was in Glasgow last week and noticed that a large Debenhams building not far from the central station had the likes of HMV and Top Man in there.

For the Crown, build a big car park at the back where the houses have been demolished and turn it into a theatre/music venue.

Two different things. The buildings in St Hilda's are to provide office space for the digital industry, to attract and retain jobs.

Oh right. They are actually building homes in St Hildas but also expanding the BoHo area - I suppose making it a modern hub.

How much to buy the Crown?
It is sometimes hard to find the owners of buildings. At one stage, about 5 yrs back, the Cleveland Centre was owned by a mid USA bank. It can be a murky world and buildings can change hands many times and not always leave an obvious trail.

Oh one of them is it! I guess that's why everything gets robbed, pulled down, given away, nudge nudge, wink wink.

My euro millions dream (one of many) was to purchase the crown and make a music hub with a recording studio, drop in music lessons and workshops free to everyone. Free practice space for bands, open mic nights, dj sets etc. The only condition is if you make it you come back and give some of your time to others.

The design and some of the features are inspired by Jack Whites 3rd man record shops, especially his recording booth (like a photo one) that produces a vinyl record in a very short space of time.

Alas its a pipe dream as I don't put the lottery on.

The Crown - Middlesbrough version of the Globe - smaller stage productions, 7 days a week. including independent cinema. Give it to The Little Theatre in exchange for their land and build houses there. That makes sense right?

House of Fraser - Give it to The Northern School of Art in exchange for the land and building on Newport Road. Much more impressive centre piece in town, greater foot fall for the local shops.

C'mon then, what's next. What's the latest trade up? The building on Newport Road.. what can we swap that for? There must be some delivery firm sitting on a prime bit of real estate. Some old council building ripe for turning into flats.

Church House -14 luxury apartments, shared roof space/garden. ample park. gym, swimming pool on the lower floors.
Gurney House - large duplex apartments
Vancouver House - luxury duplex apartments
Dundas House - large duplex apartments
Forbes Building - would be great for our version of The Corn Exchange in Leeds or the Camden Stables Market

If this is all based on securing money from the Governments "levelling up fund" then I wouldn't be getting too excited. There's probably a new wing on a stately home in Ascot to pay for, or Yarm needs its cobbles repairing in gold leaf.

Much more important.

No no no no more car parks. Build some decent apartments.

I have long thought that from the Crown to McDonalds and to the end of Baker Street should be pedestrianized and turned into a food and drink central area with outdoor seating areas and facilities to have outdoor events. It would make a such a difference to the town centre and actually bring footfall into that area.
