BIGGEST EVER BORO REGRET

Another one not been mentioned but when we came down and sold huth and tuncay relatively close to each other. I remember we had started the season strongly, looked like we were gonna go straight back up with that quality. Once they were sold, all hope was lost and the first time rebound back to the premier League was gone at that point.

Remember Tuncay got off to an unbelievable start, if we'd have kept him he'd have scored 20+ absolutely no problem

It's definitely relegation in 96/97. Now whether that's the 3 points or the coca cola cup final draw that's more responsible for it doesn't really matter.

What is gutting about it was we were actually ahead of the curve for once. We were one of the first looking to bring in big names from overseas and Gibson had the comparative wealth to attract them. Very few were spending the money we were willing to. Ravanelli would've stayed. Juninho would've stayed. Whether we'd have brought in exactly some of the names mentioned is anyone's guess, but we'd almost certainly have signed more big name superstars.

Yes we bounced straight back but the moment was gone. Everyone was at it by the time we got back into the Prem.

Losing to Seville because reaching that final was the pinnacle of Middlesbrough's entire history.

Winning the league cup was special, but reaching a European Cup final was something extraordinary, something less than 20 other different English league clubs have ever done. If we'd have won it we would have become part of an even smaller very select few of English clubs who've tasted euro glory, we'd have also beaten the mackems and skunks to a major Euro honour (Fairs cup don't count, sorry Newcastle), went on to play Barcelona in the European Super Cup, and qualified for a third season in Europe.

When I left the stadium that day I knew I'd never witness my team reach those heights again. But what a journey!
