Big problems at some airports

We're recruiting fine now but it takes time to fully train from scratch which takes the time.
In terms of other staff we used to have, they've moved on to other, less riskier jobs, though a lot have come back.
Previously, were your staff mainly from the EU or British nationalities. Are you also having to pay more to attract candidates to these roles?

Yes, we used furlough but tried to minimise the use of it. I know we aren't trying to hire staff back on less, but some airlines/airports are. We went more down the redundancy route. Definitely the biggest sufferers were crew and general handling airport staff.
Thought this might be the case, short-termism at it's finest (not aimed at you directly by the way).

One of the benefits of the furlough arrangement was that it could deal with exactly this situation, allowing services to "ramp up" effectively when restrictions were dropped.

It also appears to me that the demand forecasts of the airlines/airports dramatically missed the target, travel has returned quicker and in much greater numbers than expected which means they're struggling with demand.

Terrible worst airport experience have experienced at Leeds Bradford we que from 4:30 am outside for security security that took 3 hours to get near the front for us to be fast tracked through as flight was taking off soon. Then got to other side plane delayed by 2 hour due to refueling and luggage delays.

I'm flying from LBA at 7am tomorrow and not holding out much hope for it being a pleasant experience.

Did you have to check in any luggage or did you just have hand luggage?

Yeah, P&O rightly so go slated for it yet other companies are doing it through the back door.

Either way, they are trying to pay less and cannot fill the roles.

You would think they would pay more and entice people into the industry.
They're looking to make money primarily, not provide an essential service.

As the airport security lad next door said, they make most of their money from car parking and would be overjoyed if people parked their cars and didn't bother with the airport.

We flew at the same time and the checking in wasn't an issue, it's full of Jet2 staff. It took 2 minutes to drop the bags off. It's the security check and passport control where the issues are.

The easy way out is to cry Brexit and everyone agrees. It allows for a degree of sheer incompetence on the part of airlines. Accepting the customers’ cash should oblige them to provide at least an adequate sevice.
Personally I try very hard not to travel on holiday periods , because it is and always has been sheer hell. Not always possible, but I know the consequences if I waver from the rule.
It's not an easy way out. It's just a factual one. I know "factual" isn't a word in the vocabulary if brexitists but there you go.

just arrived home from hols this morn and the queues at leeds/bradford were horrendous, some thing needs to be done!!!

My family flew out to Malaga at 7 this morning. No issues and flight on time.

I agree with you about the short term-ism. I think there's an element for every airline that no one could be sure what was happening, how long it would take to get back to normality and also...if you think about it logically, it isn't just about the UK - it involves all other countries where that airline might operate in. The UK may relax things to look at bringing more staff back, but the countries an airline operates in also dictates how many services can operate there, if the schedule has to change etc etc. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Plus, you only have to look at those airlines who got it wrong and went bust, so I think in all honesty, most airlines made difficult decisions to try and actually make sure there was an airline left. If more airlines had gone bust, no one would be travelling now.

Flew out from Newcastle with Jet2 last Sunday early evening to Lanzarote. We had one of their Indulgence Escapes Holidays and were fast tracked through check in. The q's were long for those not as fortunate as us. Flight delayed 3/4 hour, no reason given. Flight back home on time and only delays were going though U.K border control checks, about 20mins. Luggage collection etc was fine.
I have to say that Jet2 have been great at customer service. We were caught in the Covid lockdown in Lanzarote 2years ago, mid holiday and they were brilliant in informing us what was going on. I heard a whisper from the Pilates girl poolside that the word on the street was that everything was going to be shut down, and it was. But Jet 2 beat the hotel in informing us what was going to happen. Went back to same location/hotel and was amazed to see we were in a completely new hotel and old under refurbishment. It was to complete the holiday we missed out on last time.
Jet2 helped me get a minor medical emergency sorted and checked back later in week. I am impresssed with the service we have recieved.
As someone has already posted, we are very lucky to still have an airline Industry to fly us anywhere.
I've got a couple of motorcycle trips to make later in the year across the channel, not sure what to expect in terms of delays and customs arrangemnts.

I checked in luggage this is fine and easy it's just security defiently be there for 4am latest

I think it will sort its self out by the end of the Summer.

From the comments its seems to be outgoing security checks that are most affected, Isn't that UK Border Security staff?

I remember waiting nearly 2 hours before @ Gatwick to get booked in to flew to Greece and that was in 2004.

Demand seems to be back to normal which suggests UK travellers don't feel poor.

I've managed to secure fast track for MCR flight next Wednesday. Hopefully that (plus an earlier arrival at the airport) should be sufficient.

Can't help but think demand must be higher this week due to half term etc.

Interestingly Cost of Living Crisis and Covid (795 died in the UK with it last week) doesn't seem to stop people flying.

I think it's worth noting that for some people holidays from pre-covid have been moved to now so a lot of people will have paid for these years ago. And are now getting cancelled.
