Biden opposes Post-Brexit Irish Border

So what’s the plan now? No trade deal with the EU or America?

President-elect Joe Biden has said America does not want a "guarded border" between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland following Brexit.

He said it had taken a lot of hard work to reach a settlement on the island of Ireland, ending decades of conflict.

The UK government has threatened to overrule the Brexit withdrawal agreement which committed it to keeping the border open.

Mr Biden has previously said Brexit must not endanger the peace process.

Speaking to reporters in Wilmington, Delaware, on Tuesday, Mr Biden said: "We do not want a guarded border. We've worked too long to get Ireland worked out.

"The idea of having a border north and south once again being closed is just not right, we've just got to keep the border open."

It's good to see we are officially the 51st state.
Not a very insightful reply SAB. The USA have every right to have an opinion on the GFA, they were part of the brokering team. They are also free, as a sovereign nation they are free to enter trade deals with whom they choose.

Meanwhile on this side of the pond our prime minister is ready to renege on a deal he signed a year go.

I'm no fan of Brexit nor Johnson and his cohorts, but nobody in the British Govt wants bother again, NI dont want problems or Eire. Brexit is here the Irish economy is goosed without us too.

I would imagine we get a deal now and we can all get on with life. Biden is just speaking to people who are using a reply for sensationalism.

A country like ours should never break the law. But does Boris understand the concept of the truth?

It really gets to you that the council estates did not toff their cap to you and decided their own future.

Give Brexit at least 5 years, after all we were in the EU since the early 70's. during that period we lost the coal mines, steel making, ship building, most of the chemical plants, the clothing factories In that referendum I voted to join, but what we have now is not even close to that we joined.

Is that a yes?
To what? This week on here Brexit has been blamed for the closure of Nissan apart from it hasn't closed.

The inconsistency of the remain argument is unreal, we lose industrial jobs during being a member is a sign of the times, but a rumour on a plant is Brexit.

You really don't like the idea poor people voted Tory and Brexit, me I accept it.

It's Johnson and his team you need to be telling all this to, SAB. They made the promises which they have singularly failed to deliver, not any remoaners.

I agree on that, as I said we should never break international law.

Do you think Biden would take any notice of Boris if he gave advice on Covid in Kansas?

During the 1850s Kansans were given the nickname “Jayhawkers” after a mythical bird in Irish folklore that worried its prey to death.

The stories about Nissan and Brexit were due to comments coming out of Nissan being regurgitated by the media, understandable whether you voted for Brexit or not. You tried to steer it in the direction of being all about electric cars.

Poor people have elected every Tory leader, this one isn't a one off. I'd be a fool to accept it as being good for society.
