Biannual World Cup

At first I thought 'Nah' but then I saw it was being put forward by Arsene Wenger so I thought well he's not daft, so let's see what he's got to say

Article here

Although I'm still not entirely convinced, there are some merits to his case

- better opportunities for small countries to be involved in the finals
- more money generated would be invested in football development worldwide
- more opportunities to target young talent that would otherwise not get a chance
- much simpler qualifying system meaning travelling for qualifying games will be reduced by over 50%

There are arguments against all of these points of course but the last one is the best one for me

Please read the article and give it a bit of thought before dismissing out of hand thank you :)

The problem will come in Olympic years and how will they fit in a European Championship and a World Cup in the same summer?

They’re already increasing the amount of teams to 48 by 2026 so Wengers points don’t make sense by also increasing the frequency of world
cups.

i respect Wenger as a football coach and expert but can’t help be suspicious that he lives half his time in the Middle East working regularly for a TV company based there apart from his FIFA duties. It’s a money culture that pervades through all decisions made. He is massively off track with this.

No.

As per TeaCider. Plus it would have a negative impact on federation regional tournaments ie. euros / cops America etc.

And 48 teams is way too many too.

it baffles me why qualifying is not counted as being part of the tournament. It is! You are competing in the early part of the tournament to reach the final part of the tournament. If you don’t do well enough on the qualifying you are knocked out of the tournament.

later stages of a tournament should see the best make it furthest. If you increase the numbers at the finals then you dilute that.

32 is big enough and works out exactly correct for group and knockout numbers without having to resort to 3 team groups, or two group stages.

Hate the way the money men are destroying football and it’s history.

What would happen to the Euros as they currently fit in the middle of the world cup cycle? Is this FIFA trying to marginalise UEFA?

Perhaps the answer is like the FA cup with preliminary rounds. Every year with a single knockout tie in each round. Luck of the draw as to whether you get a home or away draw.

I don’t believe there’s anything wrong with current format for qualifying and finals. This sort of biennial idea is just nonesense and pip-squeezing by greedy gets with no interest or understanding of the game and what makes it special. I can’t believe Wenger is on board with it, must’ve been paid /promised a lot. Lost a lot of my respect for him with this.

Agree. I'm sorry but I was trying to think of a worse idea than team expansion and every 2 years.
