Betfred Blackjack player wins £1.7m after High Court battle

The firm had refused to pay claiming they could avoid doing so by pointing to their terms and conditions. They even offered the customer £60k to forget about the £1.7m and not to mention it again. Pretty ridiculous really, it's taken him a few years to get his money. No doubt Betfred will still be operating under a UK licence and taking money off people who think they will be paid straight up if they hit a big win.

Betfred reckon there was a glitch with the game and after hearing he won the jackpot three times, it sounds like there was. Betfred didn't come out of this case covered in glory and the £60,000 grand to forget about £1.7 m was pathetic.

There's no doubt idiots will be queuing up to give Betfred there £1.7m back - chicken feed when you think Bet365 paid Denise Coates £421m.

Well deserved. Peanuts for betfred and they should have honored that initially. I wonder if others have been paid off in the past due to glitches.

I hope he enjoys spending it now and gets back on track with his life. Takes some courage to turn down a 60k offering and go for the company.

Good for him - sounds like it has caused him a lot of problems and anguish when he should have been celebrating. As mentioned a drop in the ocean for them - they should have just paid up at the start and fixed the issues on their side. It’s not like you can phone up when you lose a bet and say yes I made an error so can I have my money back.

good luck to him!

Agree with just paying out and they could have used to their advantage - marketing ploy.

The min they offered him 60k to forget about it he had them regardless of if the game was faulty or not. It was damage limitation and they knew it... good on him for standing his ground.

Don't want to be the person that brings the mood down, but did I read in one of the reports he spent 6 hours on the game before he won? Shows how addictive these games are.

I know he deserves his payout, but I can't help but think there's some poor soul out there spending 6 hours a day playing these games and now thinks the next spin will bring them a £1.7m glitch

Yeah he put a hundred quid in and was down to his last 15p

hopefully he doesn’t gamble all this away

Just seen the news, as he said take on the big boys, the bullies, fantastic result for him, wonder how many times this has happened in the past & people have just walked away
Good on him, bet Fred finally sent him a text apologising it took so long to pay up, now just over £2m, enjoy it mate, well earned

I've not read it, but was wondering if Betfred will also be liable for his legal fees, which will not be insignificant, even given his £1.7m winnings

Fairplay👍

You think how much these betting companies take daily with little or no regard for a person's financial situation or mental state.

I imagine it's a drop in the ocean to many 'bigger' betting companies. I guess it was a balsy move turning down 60k and also running the risk of losing and paying legal fees etc.

That said he's apparently a bit of a hardcore gambler. I can't say I'd ever play an online casino for 6 hours straight. Hopefully he won't gamble it away.

I'm not sure how anyone can play online casinos/ slot machines for a length of time.

I've won a few free spins on betting sites and it is boring to play them, almost an endurance test I found to get through them.

In Las Vegas, when a jackpot is paid out on the slot machines (usually in the millions or hundreds of millions on occasions) the machines have to be checked before a payout for glitches. Imagine winning millions to be told it was a glitch but here’s a free buffet coupon.

It was actually Playtech, the game provider, who said it was a glitch and advised to hold the payout. Sounds like they went on to provide very little or no explanation as to what the glitch was

It was 6 hours on his phone as well, I was once awarded 100 free spins on some Virgin Bet thing, did about the first 10 and then pressed the auto spin thing and just left it. In the end I think I "won" a fiver that couldn't be withdrawn so ended putting it on foitball bet. Still couldn't withdraw it though, not because of the t&c's but cos I couldn't tip coal 😁

Incorrect. The type of jackpot game that it is, there isn’t really any major financial gain to be had by BetFred through refusing to pay it out.
