BeeLine v Bob’s buses

I was a young beeline lad (with the ra ra’s in the 70’s. Them Bob’s busses lads were a tad on the naughty side sometimes.
I do remember a tale about A ‘Bob’s coach hired by a group from Thorntree.
Turned up at away game full. Driver went back on his own - they were all in the cells.

We went to Liverpool v Boro FAC QF on the bobs coaches & broke down near Skipton, needless to say unfortunately we never made it to the game

We used Smalls of Thornaby, Beggs, Bee Line, was on the last notorious United bus to Coventry away. Also used Maddrens( Ves, Willies brother) BR football special, Kings coaches, but mostly Arthur Harrisons bus that was every home game from 1968 until 1985 he put it on for lots of away cup matches too. God rest you Arthur and your Russian hat, a grand pipe smoking man and a great Boro fan. A tanner return from the Roseworth pub, I lived on the Woodlands Est so it was 15 mins walk, 20p return in the 70s 50p when I started work in 79. Happy happy days.

You stirred a memory in me there of the BR football special which I sampled only once to go to Liverpool in the midst of the hooligan era. That was some experience, I was relieved to get off it....

What happened to BeeLine?

According to my sister Bee-line was part of Ellerman Travel which included Bee-line coaches Leisure Hotels (Grand Hotels and Royal group all over UK) and the Ellerman Line cruises. They sold the coach side to Wallace Arnold and the travel became Lunn Poly. Wallace Arnold may still be on the go but the others are long gone along with Thomsons who bought out Lunn Poly.
