Best Boro left-back of the modern era

Ziege was the best player, but French Franck is understandably more popular.
Dean Gordon is a worthy mention too; decent bloke by all accounts, sometimes comes along to training sessions with the junior team a friend of mine coaches.

Alan Wright? Credit where it's due: scored one of the best Riverside goals ever. Pity it wasn't for us.

Ziege > Queudrue > Friend > Gordon > Fabio Da Silva > Taylor > Pogatetz > Kinder > Phillips > Bennet > Cooper > Arca > Whyte > Harrison > Murphy > Johnson > Vidmar > Bola > Coulson > Grounds > Branco > Husband > Whelan > Halliday > Kilgallon > Wright

that's all the ones I can think of, I've included a couple of CBs who could play LB, ignored anyone that just played one or two league cup games, and ignored RBs covering at LB like Fleming.

EDITED: Added Kinder

Ziege was the better player (than Franck) but he was pretty average at left back. He was, as the OP says, a specialist wing back. After that his best position was midfield. Main reason he struggled at Liverpool IMO was because they tried using him as a pure left back. Brilliant player as a wing back though, we had the Bayern Munich version Ziege for a season. Top class.

So the answer is Franck for me. That left footed trio of him, Zenden and Downing played some great stuff down the left for us in 04/05. Think he scored as many goals as (a teenage) Cristiano Ronaldo that season.

Cult hero pick: Vladimir Kinder.

Cracking post, for me there are 4
Colin Cooper
Terry Cooper
Ziege
French Frank

And each one of the deserving of the word best, though if I'm honest, if Ziege hadn't spoilt his copybook he could have easily won that accolade for me

Special mention to Gary Hamilton mind 😉

1. Ziege
2. Franck.
3. Gordon
4. George

(from the time i've been watching Boro)

Best value for money - George.

Ziege for me as well. Completely forgot about Fabio who was a decent player, albeit very much in the mould of the modern full back (questionable defensively). Apparently he's currently playing in France with Nantes.

Jonathan Grounds another who has made a decent career for himself without ever looking great at Boro.

Loved Vlad Kinder as well - with him and Emerson in the team we could score from anywhere on the pitch :D

As for left backs, as much as I loved Franck and as class as Ziege was, prior to his injury I thought Gordon was the best left back I'd seen in a Boro shirt as he was as good going forward as he was in defence. His all round positional awareness was consistently very good I thought. The other two did have defensive lapses now and then.

He was brilliant.......for one season, I wouldn't say Ziege brilliant though. Franck obviously has the longevity, proper cult favourite
