Bernie Ecclestone pleads guilty

I've always had an irrational hatred of Ecclestone.....I guess it's now a rational one.

Agreed he's in his 90s he almost certainly will not pay for his crimes.

He won’t go to prison. Steal some rice or coffee or baby formula from Tesco though, well expect to feel the ‘full force of the law’ as they say.
"White collar crime" is a term I once heard a KC use to explain why the particular offences in that case should be mitigated.

Thos country saves more money from under claimed benefit cases than it loses in fraud.

In fact, the money lost due to fraudulent claims is relatively insignificant, but that doesn't stop the government politicising it.

£652m is a staggering amount but I have no doubt he has many times that in various hidden trusts and investments. Anyone want to guess how much inheritance tax his estate will be paying out when he's gone?

HMRC must have built up a strong case for him to plead guilty at the last minute. Just because he is an old man shouldn’t stop him serving time though.

Thanks for the circles Billy69 interesting - always thought tax evasion was much higher than benefit fraud, but didn't realise how much bigger. It would more economic for the Government to switch the vast majority of benefit fraud officers to work on tax evasion based on the circles.

Just the Bernie Eccleston tax evasion figure represents around half of all UK benefit fraud.

I haven't even menetioned tax avoidance in the UK which is a massive area, but deemed legal. Many tax reliefs are too generous e.g. £60k/year on pension relief for high earners.

I remember that I read somewhere, that when Labour came into power in 1997, they employed a fair few new tax inspectors. They were required to investigate and prosecute and make full settlement of those who avoided paying tax. They were very successful, but were laid off some years later. Guess which party were in power when that happened.

It makes the whole Tory shtick of getting people to focus on benefits cheats and asylum seekers as being the reason why public services and the nhs are so underfunded , even more hateful. Its a huge con trick.

I remember changing jobs about 8 years ago and falling foul of the Tory austerity Child Benefit rules. HMRC were very quickly all over me. It’s staggering that normal people can be hit quickly but the very wealthy dodge it for years. Most dodge it completely too.

I remember snide comments from Osbourne when he was chanceloer and cutting welfare benefits saying it was unfair the working were funding the non working i.e. curtains closed at 9am in some houses, on low income hosuing estates.

What he should have said it was unfair some working class people were funding the Ecclestones pure crystal baths and the children's birthday parties with real garaffes and zebras etc.
