On the 23rd January

October 1978 I remember walking home from work one night & bought the evening gazette & there blazing the back page headlines Boro break transfer record

Boro were winless at home to this point & manager John Neal wanted width in his team so went out & signed Terry Cochrane from Burnley for a then club record fee of £238k

I'd never hear of him, or didn't even know we were interested in him

The following Saturday, October 14th, my 18th TC made his debut & TBH I seen no one at the Boro set up like him up to that point as a fan, as the game approached kick off Terry Cochrane went across to the touchline & stuck to it the whole match, it could be rose tinted glasses, but I would say a crowd favourite was born

He tortured Norwich & we gained our 1st home win of the season, with ac2nil victory, the following week Wolves at home & another 2 nil victory

Terry Cochranes 3rd game, his 1st away game, another 2 nil win & TC scoring his 1st Boro goal as Boro brushed aside Aston Villa

In October 1983 Terry moved on to Gillingham, with a, short spell in Hong Kong, later Terry played for Millwall, Hartlepool & Synners, 128 games between 1978-83, scoring 12 & who could forget 3 of those goals, when thrashing Chelsea 7-2 in the 1978 & 2 in the 1980-81 FAC run one against Swansea away & Wolves at home

He teased & tormented opposing full backs, even had John Craggs pulling his hair out at times

Evening, Erimus. Great piece. Cochrane and Burns were great, great signings. Loved the pair of them. John Neal arguably our most under rated managers
Hello Nosmo-king, yes what a pair of signings those two were 👍

Micky Burns scored on his debut, 7th October 1978, in a 3-2 defeat away to Man Utd, a week before Terry's,

Do you see him as a crowd favourite, or an icon of the Boro?

Depending how you see his time at our club, he certainly brightened up many an afternoon, or a dull match day

Always with socks round ankles.
He could fly down the wings and score from anywhere.
Always looked sleight compared to some of the bulky opposition defenders.
Belated happy birthday Terry.

Such a skillful, jinking player. Even at his time here, he was regarded as a throwback. But fortunately wingers did come back into fashion. But he was so exciting wasn't he, the way he would slalom past players and through defences.

Loved his style, shirt out, socks rolled down his ankles, quality

I've often mentioned on here, a club & manager can be a perfect fit & he certainly was
