Behind closed doors games will increase gambling risks for many – FSA Survey

New research carried out on behalf of GambleAware by The Football Supporters’ Association suggests that fans who like to bet in-play will be 83% more likely to place an in-play bet while they are watching a match live at home, than if they were watching it in a stadium.
Some of you filled in the survey at the start of the week - this is worrying because the data is not circumstantial but is drawn from fans like us on message boards and supporter groups etc.

Whilst I don't doubt the 83% thing, there are countless matches on every week on TV, pre-lockdown. Its not like some people were attending all those matches before, and now they're not? 1 match per fortnight for most fans, unless they're particularly wedded to betting on/against their own team?

The worrying thing is that this information comes directly from fans that do like a flutter, either infrequently or frequently.

"With the Premier League and EFL seasons set to kick off behind closed doors this weekend, the survey also found that of those who said they will bet more this season, 73% will do so because it’s easier to bet at home than at the match, while 36 percent admitted that not being at the game could lead to them ‘betting bored’."

Hmmm I don’t buy this. People who like to bet on football will bet on football. The ones who like to bet when they go to the live games will just do an acca pre game rather than betting in play.

I love betting on football but don’t buy this at all.

It is worrying because of the spiral of debt and depression. If you think back to last season and the terrible number of suicides amongst relatively young men within Boro supporters alone and all the work that was being done with the club and other agencies to try and tackle what seemed like a storm tide. It was one to one chatting to people but it is so much harder to do this now.

Block 21 - I put the survey link on this board last weekend and some people filled it in from here. Nearly 1000 did all told across the country - it was survey monkey and not just one or two questions.

I don’t doubt that I just don’t see how it would make a difference in my opinion.

No I meant why is it a problem that the people being asked are the people who gamble? Seems little point asking people who don't gamble.

Some people thrive in lockdown others find it incredibly boring and soul destroying. I think for excitement purposes I would have expected betting to go up during lockdown for people of a certain disposition. Stuck at home with a lot of time on their hands could lead to a cycle of betting and more betting. As gambling draws people in they could easily succumb to betting more and more,

Im not in that place but I can easily see how people could find themselves getting deeper and deeper!

When not attending matches people save money be that on not buying tickets or food and transport to the game, some will think I will put the money on the match, which harmless for many for some its the start of a rocky road to addiction.
The gambling adverts before during and after are there for a reason, to hook people.
Iam bot against people spending their money as they see fit but safeguards need to be there for those at risk.

I would expect the adverts do more to draw people in than preventing them from gambling money they don’t have.

Gambling is terrible addiction.

I love the new kits but I hate the gambling logos on them. Ruins the kit.

I am sorry but you can’t blame games being played behind closed doors for the increase in gambling, you can though blame the countless adverts that we are subjected to.

English football has signed a Faustian pact with the gambling companies so they can’t really complain about it now as they seem happy to take their money or splash the logos over their product. So where do they think all this money comes from ?

I’m still amazed that they have got away with the “when the fun stops... stop” logo as you say it’s an addiction so the fun never stops for an addict.

plus seeing the likes Merson on the sky bet add sums it up for me.
