Barry Coppinger quits a PCC

8 years I think we all know that’s not true. As said he’s been in and around Cleveland police for years a lot longer than 8 years that’s for sure.

we have to be careful commenting on things like this. But I dare say we all have our own views and opinion on this that maybe we can’t express on a public forum.

I’ll say again I’m amazed Cleveland police is still in existence.

A very nice man and exceptionally dedicated to his job and the people he served. Banging his head against the wall often without the powers to make wholesale branch and root changes to Cleveland Police.
A constant presence in working with voluntary and community groups in efforts to make the police more accountable and to better serve the public.

PCCs should be abolished.
Been a completely pointless position, only ever hear about them through controversy.
My local one is great, met him a couple of times to raise an issue which I thought the Police weren't putting enough attention on & other forces were, shortly afterwards the police announced an operation to target the issue.
Had tried doing it via PACTs, had met a local Inspector but hadn't got anywhere.

Not perfect but better than no opportunity to influence what the Police target their resources on.

Barry and his office helped us in matters when individual fans were being targeted on social media - the response was immediate could not have been more helpful. Also helped bring police back into contact with supporters groups again and up communication once more.

It's interesting to hear some of the views on here, which tend to be polarised extremes.

The accurate truth is he has played politics to protect his own position for years, scapegoating good people in order to escape any personal criticism.

He's a politician by nature and many of his decisions have been absolutely catastrophic for Cleveland Police, leaving a lasting legacy of scandal, when in fact those 'scandals' are nothing of the sort. In fact, the scandals have been largely created by him (and others), by disassociating themselves from them, rather than telling the truth. For example, the view that Cleveland Police is institutionally racist is categorically untrue - feel free to point me to where the evidence of that is?

So I find it ironic that Cleveland Police have seen an opportunity to oust him, when he has looked to marginalise so many others, through no fault of their own. I think it's called Karma.

Good riddance to him, but sadly politics across Teesside is toxic and the introduction of PCC's has tainted policing with it too - the bad politics wont end with his resignation, nor will the bad news.

Have you met him and worked with him?

Let’s be honest here. No one on here will have worked with any senior member (or any member) Of government, or even met to add. But that doesn’t stop anyone lambasting them. If he wants to lambast Barry Coppinger then why not, it doesn’t stop anyone else doing it against other members of society (without meeting or knowing them).

He is the evidence Jonny...

Doesn't get much more damning than the Macpherson report: 20 years on and the Home Affairs select committee

Seems most people on here who have had a 'working' relationship with him have seen what a positive guy he's been. The police rely on lots of volunteer support agencies and he's been excellent in that respect.

I've come across him in three aspects of volunteering activity. In 'night shelter' work, he came out at 2am to see the sort of issues we had to help out with.

Know Barry decent honest bloke. My mother never saw eye to eye with him when she was a councillor but that was mainly due to his position on Mallans Executive committee. She had no time to how Mallan ran roughshod over the Council using the Executive powers. Barry was the only one of here former council associates who came to her funeral. Agree with The Lodger above and I also hope he enjoys his retirement.

Had lots of nights out with him in our younger days. He used to love going to see bands hopefully will get time to again.
Ray Mallon was a welcome change from the shambles that went before. The council was previously ran by simpletons who were using their positions to fill their own pockets. The real Labour Party figures on the council actually helped Mallon defeat the official Labour candidate. Barry Coppinger was one of those. Apart from political opponents, most people speak highly of him. Hopefully Paul Williams will take over the reigns.

Is he likely to stand?

Might be spot on but it's not what people want to hear.

Yet again, you're talking absolute guff.

Hardly. There are some people lambasting Coppinger and the defence is “well I know him and have met him”. Same people who lambast others without knowing them or meeting them.

Can’t have it both ways. Only in your blinkered works maybe

Look at the part of your post I've quoted.

You claimed "No one on here will have worked with any senior member (or any member) Of government, or even met to add" I'm saying that's rubbish, there's a few people on here who have worked with members of of the government in various capacities.

Not sure how the McPherson report evidences the current Cleveland Police situation and, in case you're not familiar with the NBPA, they are an often aggressive and not always helpful organisation - asserting something to be true does not make is so.

The institutional racism stuff came up in 2012/13 didn't it, but related to incidents in 1993 and earlier?
