Hope the Geordie Pirlo can recapture some of what he had for Rotherham this season - he's one of the best passers of the ball I've seen at Boro, if the rest of his game can catch up there's a proper player in there.

I don't think Carrick helped him much by playing him as our deepest midfielder last season, although we were limited for options due to injuries.
The opposition worked out that he struggled when pressed and because of this we couldn't play the ball out from defence effectively.
I do remember him coming on later on in games during those final games of the season and he looked good playing higher up the pitch, so maybe he can be effective for us playing box-to-box.

He's a yard slow both with his head and with his feet. I desperately want him to do well.
I think he's fine for a 4th choice midfielder in the squad which is where he probably is now.
He played too much last season but hopefully we don't have another horror season with injuries.
He has his weaknesses and it's not good enough to be a regular starter but really what can you expect as a 4th choice midfielder in the Championship. Players who are much better than Barlaser aren't going to be happy with a handful of games a season.

He was largely awful last season, as has been said he’s a liability defensively and very slow on the ball. But with the squad we have now I can see us dominating possession and that suits him. He had some very good games last season, they were just too few and far between. With a season under his belt, I think he’ll improve.
Chuba was worse than him his first few seasons with us. Anything can happen.

I'm not a fan and think we need better players in the spine if we want to be successful. Will be the first to eat humble pie if he clicks this season

a player who doesnt suit our style of play, due to him being to slow all round (physically and mentally) suddenly not be all that then be successful? something would have to change? our style of play isnt, hes not going to improve physically, mentally is it possible to improve your speed of thought and decision making? I actually dont think its possible for him to be successful for us. We are better off selling him ASAP and sign someone who has a chance to improve.

I actually thought Gilbert in his run towards the end of the season showed the kind of ambition and vision with some of his passing that I hoped to see more of from Barlaser, but obviously he was playing higher up the field than Barlaser does.
Barlaser wants too much time on the ball, can't move it quickly enough and actually his short passing is quite loose. I'd like to see him in a 3, based a bit more upfield with the opportunity to try more progressive through balls but it's not a role that fits in the Carrick system where the 2 mids are a deeper pivot.

We have more pace to run in behind this season and having someone who can cut through a team with one pass could be very handy. He's the best passer of a ball we've got and the likes of Burgzorg, Jones, LL and hopefully Hamilton and Conway will benefit from it.
At times last season when LL, Jones, Forss and Bangura were injured, we really struggled to get out against teams, no outlet for him and I personally think it caused a couple of his mistakes.
Hopefully this season we'll see unless someone we can't say no to becomes available and he isn't given the game time.

You really can't have a player playing deeper than the centre backs who can't tackle. Also, there's a big gap where a central midfielder is meant to stand and 2 centre half's stood around looking at Barlaser.

He has the best passing stats in the division. He has some of the worst defensive stats in the division too.
He is an excellent passer of the ball.

He only played two seasons for us, and in one of those he scored 29 goals.

I think he will be displaced by Law Mccabe as that 4th option in the midfield and will leave by Jan, if not before.
He certainly has some qualities, but for a team that wants to play possession football he is not good enough playing on the half turn against the press when we are in possession, and not mobile enough to help the defence out when we are out of possession.
