Frustrating watching this guy, but I think I might have figured out his problem.
in a Rotherham team, where he was clearly their outstanding player, their midfield were tasked with harrying and snapping into tackles to provide him with the ball.
when playing in a two for Boro, I see him so often on his heels expecting others to do the dirty work and not anticipating where he can get a foot in, and win a challenge for a team-mate. He looks lazy and scared to mix it.
if he can’t or won’t improve in this area, he’ll not make it at our club. I hope this is something he wants to, and is capable of doing. He’s got many good attributes, and I want him to fulfil his potential

I want to see goals and assists from midfield. Barlaser adds none of that. People can talk all day about his passing quality but his set pieces are terrible and he doesn't score goals. Nice lad but nowhere near good enough.

If everyone was fit he’d be a sub. I actually think we have the players to make a 3-5-2 work for us if we got all the injured ones back in the side. Clarke, Fry, Van Den Berg the three at the back, Bangura and Jones as wing backs, Hackney, O’Brein, McGree in midfield with Josh an Lath the front two

We pretty much threatened from every one of his corners in the first half and scored from one in the last match v Huddersfield.

I think he's excellent with the ball at his feet. He sees a pass - as does Rodgers - and his set pieces are better than we've had for a long time. He was outstanding first half and even with a weak second half - like the rest - doesn't deserve to be dropped. Both Howson & him started to disappear second half and you have to give the opposition credit to an extent. Like Carrick said in his post-match, the games caught up with them; some of those players are running on empty after four big games in 10 days

Seen the both sides of Barlaser today. Was pretty good first half when we had more of the ball without being as good as he was against WBA and Rotherham. But he was terrible second half when Coventry stepped it up a gear and all his weaknesses came to the forefront.

It just shows why he can't be first choice in that position though. He's not all rounded enough. Whebln teams start dominating possession against us or the midfield becomes a bit of a scrap, he just disappears from the game.

Hackney is the obvious first choice with Howson/Barlaser/O'Brien competing for that second spot when players start returning from fitness.

He was one the two best players on the pitch in the first half - but was terrible second half. Suspect he was tired after the run of Christmas games. Howson also had a terrible second half.

As above I think all of our midfielders could do with someone more combatative next to them.

Our midfield stats in the league so far...
But I guess it's easy to make Barlaser the whipping boy... I want to see goals and assists from all our midfield...

Hackney... Played 16 Goals 1 Assists 0
Barlaser Played 17 Goals 0 Assists 2
Howson Played 23 Goals 2 Assists 1

It's all about opinions isn't it? I wasn't aware of those stats but my opinion is based on what I see of him in the flesh. He's not my whipping boy, I don't have any, but for me he doesn't offer anywhere near enough in all departments.

We created loads of chances again and didn’t put enough of them away. Last season we had 2 strikers playing well and scored more than missed when big chances came. Until we get a striker who puts them away we’ll be average.
