Bands you saw live before they made it big (and you knew they'd make it)

I saw Franz Ferdinand supporting Belle and Sebastian just before they released take me out. I’m a big Belle and Sebastian fan, but they were blown off the stage that night.

Lorde. To be honest I didn't know she would make it as people tend to have **** tastes and pick up on music that really doesn't stand out. No idea why Adele and that ginger bloke should be so successful. Why Westlife over every other band that sang ballads sitting on stools until the key change? Why were sugababes successful but Annie not? Stitskin and Babylon Zoo make number one and lily's barely make the top 20? It doesn't make sense.

Was that at the University of Northumbria by any chance?

Roxy Music saw them at the Redcar Jazz Club when they were actually the support act to a showing of a Jimi Hendrix concert film Live At Berkley. They were unlike anything I had ever seen.

Slade at the same venue when they should have been support to DaDa but went on last after they were delayed getting there.

Sex Pistols at the Town Hall Crypt supporting Dr's Of Madness. If if the band weren't too confident of how they went down I thought they were brilliant. Only went because we thought it was an all girl band.

Damned at Coatham Bowl supporting Flaming Groovies. One of the most exciting bands I had seen up to that point.

Not sure if my memory is playing tricks but seem to remember going to Redcar Jazz Club to see Jethro Tull. They didn't turn up but saw Free and it was great.

I went to see Stereo MC's in (I think) '90 with a then little known band called Blur. A year later they released their debut album Leisure, the rest as they say is history

Saw Roxy Music at Newcastle City Hall in the summer of 1979, they were supported by The Tourists. After the gig me, my brother and our mates Phil and Keith went to a nearby restaurant for a meal and Annie Lennox, Dave Stewart and the rest of the Tourists were on the next table. Wish I had said hello!

I saw Catfish and the Bottlemen at the Westgarth and knew they were going to be big.

I remember Van announced that Cocoon was going to be on the next Fifa game.

I saw this thread and came on here to say the same thing! I saw them twice, first time just after Rango was released as a single and the Westgarth was busy but not full. Second time I saw them the place was packed out!

I can remember seeing The Primitives in a tiny venue in Leeds just as Crash broke and the place was heaving.

Yep - also saw Catfish and the Bottlemen twice at Westgarth - both fab gigs but the latter was heaving!

Not the same I know, but the first time I heard Oasis I said to the guys I was with (we were getting petrol at the Yarm Shell garage on the way out for a beer) they will be huge. They still rib me about saying "I should put a bet on them getting a No1" to this day.

Thanks for that I may have got it the wrong way round I think. Did Jethro Tull play instead of Free?

Checked the Jazz Club book Tull played 11 May 1968 and Free the following week on 18 May. No mention of one of them not turning up. Only listing I can find for Tull but Free played their a lot and as I said they pulled out of one show as Kossoff was in bad way and couldn't play.
