Bands who were better live than in the studio

You might like this one...

There's just something about that song that sends shivers down your spine. Thom does a decent job there but if I was ever going to go on 'Stars in their eyes' I'd be Ian Curtis and I'd wipe the floor with the rest of the contestants. I sound more like Curtis then he ever did himself when I put my mind to it. I do a pretty decent Morrissey impression too. Thanks for that mate.

Edit: Funny how your eyes and your brain can play tricks on you. I've always read your username as the Tom Waits album title and I've only just this moment realised that the words are in the wrong order.

One group that sticks in my mind from the mid 70s onwards for a good few years are The Climax Blues Band. I saw them in loads of different venues from the intimacy of the Coatham Bowl to the anonymity of the Reading Festival. They were great whenever I saw them and are miles better than they are on album. Fast forward 15 years and the same is true of The Saw Doctors.

A definite Marmite band ( not so much if you were a music journalist back in the day - who universally sneered and hated them for lack of chordalar countage ) record wise - but live was a whole different ball game, more so as at times the crowd was bat **** crazy, which amped up the atmosphere.

After a few years in the 60's wilderness ( thoroughly deserved IMHO ),refining their direction, sound, skills and showtime - they turned things around with a string of album releases that hit the spot for a small audience - from the almost grungelike Ma Kellys, through the DoggyHead , Piledriver < possibly a 'live' studio recording ) up to the eponymous LIVE.

After which it all came to a grinding halt recording wise - ABSOLUTE GAAARBAGE from here on out - though live still managed to stride some brilliant performances.
But for those early 70's to 77 years - Status Quo ( stop giggling at the back) were pretty damn fine Live Show.

Once upon a time on a forum many Internet hops away, I wanted that Tom Waits album name as my username, it was taken so I rehashed it. That site is long gone but when I registered on FMTTM I kept my version as I'd become attached to it!

Well it seems like I'm still the only person on here who has accidentally seen a founder member of The Velvet Underground's nob so I think that means that I win the thread.
