Ayala

Mowbray didn’t sign him originally?

Yes he did:

"Back when Mowbray was manager of Middlesbrough, Ayala was plying his trade with Norwich City and an opportunity arose for Mowbray to take the young Spanish defender on a three-month emergency loan in October 2013.

Ayala was an instant hit, but even his arrival couldn't prevent Mowbray from the axe and the Blackburn Rovers boss was replaced by Aitor Karanka, who went onto sign Ayala for a bargain price of £400,000 in January 2014. Six years on and Ayala can reflect on his stint on Teesside with great pride, collecting Player of the Year awards and playing an influential role in their route to the Premier League in the 2015-16 season."

Good memory there Roofie!

Don’t get the bad feeling towards Ayala.

Signed for peanuts, a goal threat, one of best players in the promotion season. Could have moved on a free when his stock was high and he signed a new deal.

He got offered less money and the club have a pr machine behind them to make him look bad.

I dont think he would, the way Dijksteel, Fry and Mcnair have played this season would make it very difficult to justify playing anyone else.

Thought he had become a bit of a liability over the last few seasons tbh, probably more down to the coaching team than anything else.

Of course he would. He's one of the best centre halves in the league when fit.

"When fit" has always been his biggest issue and it's certainly not going to get better as he gets older you'd think. But his ability has never been in doubt.

I don't think it's any coincidence that our form (and ability to keep clean sheets) nosedived after his injury last year.

Mogga had actually been sacked by the time Ayala signed though, Venus was caretaker manager IIRC?

Ayala signed on 23rd October and Mowbray was sacked on 21st October. Deal was almost done in the summer but blocked due to Norwich player injuries so no doubt Mowbray had identified Ayala as a target and was probably the reason we continued that interest but he did officially sign after Mowbray had departed with Venus in charge as an interim manager.

Great player for us and we have a lot to be thankful for but he moved on as do many players. Only ever been one player who I was sad to see leave and that would be Juninho. You could see his passion for the club and the fans especially on the final day of the season when he wept at Elland Road.

I've not seen anything to suggest Grant Hall is any better than Shotton as things stand. Strong, aggressive, experienced, prone a blunder every game. Hall isn't fit to lace Ayala's boots.

When you sign a player like Ayala for free, you must be doing something right.
When fit he would get into any championship level team. And definitely ours.
If he had still been here, we wouldn’t have played Mcnair at the back like.

Grant Hall will struggle to get back in the team, never mind Ayala. Shotton might have a chance.
We've conceded just 4 goals this season in 6 matches.
We've played the top 4 including 2 relegated Parachute Payment clubs and conceded 2 goals.
We've played the top 2 in the last 5 days and not conceded.
I'd suggest we are not missing Mr Ayala at all and certainly not his enormous pet lip.

I tend to agree with Indeedido - 4 goals conceeded against some of the divisions top teams is good going. Also considering according to many on this board we have one of the poorest keepers (not me btw) in the Championship.

Ayala I still think is a useful player when fit, but he has passed his peak - say when he was 26 to 27.
