Auf Wiedersehen, Pet

Two things that have always bugged me from series one

Why would staunch Newcastle fans travel to another country to support Sunderland?

And how did they know where Dagmar lived when the hut burnt down?

A lot of people did used to go one week to see Newcastle and Sunderland the next, but it had probably died out by the early 80’s.

Mick Connell came round our house a few times. He had some pretty funny stories. He used to hang around a certain phonebox waiting for a call from Hollywood (where Clement and Le Frenais were). He was, shall we say, known to the police ... one night they pulled up and asked him what he was doing. They didn't believe his story until the phone rang and he handed it to them.

I always thought that. Even Neville gets stroppy when Bomber mentions the result. I'm guessing Clement and La Frenais didn't get the rivalry between fans.

I've worked up there in the past and a lot of fans used to go to Newcastle one week and Sunderland the other.
Bear in mind that until the last 20 years (at a guess), the Mackems were always classed as Geordies ......... iirc when Hall took over Newcastle and made up the 'Toon Army' the seperation started.

It definitely changed in the 70's when fans became tribal. I never understood why they just didn't have Newcastle playing in Belgium. Still would've worked in the story. Anyway, doesn't detract from a majestic piece of tv.

Barry: [holding a large painting of a nude lady] “I bought it for the technique, to be honest I didn’t notice the subject”

Wayne: “you’re the only bloke who could say that, and I’d believe him”.

Classic TV!
