Attracting Players to our area…

Anyone that thinks we don't struggle because of location is a bit deluded. If you are from the NE then you have experience of living there so see ti differently but the rest of the country sees it as a desolate wasteland. Young players especially don't care about the Dales. Has nobody met a 20 year old, never mind one earning thousands per week? They don't care about going for a walk. The social side of things is important to them. Most of those other places listed are as bad as Middlesbrough in terms of a young player's desirability to live there but the majority of them have the advantage of being near somewhere that players would want to live. All those NW teams are close enough to Manchester that the specific towns being undesirable doesn't matter.

Players towards the end of their career and bored of the partying might appreciate somewhere quieter like our surrounding areas and players might move here not being too enthusiastic about living here but decide they do actually like it once they have experienced it but it doesn't make the sell any easier and that is the important part. Fact of the matter is that most people from the south wouldn't entertain the idea of moving to Teesside. Footballers are no different in that respect. The big house thing isn't really a big deal. Footballers earn enough that it doesn't make much difference. If they are getting £20k+ per month they can afford a nice house in any area of the country, even London.

It's long been accepted that it's harder to recruit players to all the NE teams mainly because of the geography. Players are just normal people with more ££ than most and the same as the posters on this thread all will have somewhat different requirements for themselves and very importantly their families if they have them. Just because they can hop in a car with a driver or a train/plane to party doesn't mean to say their partners want to live 100s of miles away from friends and family.
Believe it or not, not all players come from the south east and long to live there.
The PL is the draw, then London for overseas and some young players.
After that there really is no reason for players to especially not want to come here.

Spot on(y)

Do you reckon some clubs still think they can milk us because we have paid inflated transfers in the past?
Thinking of Savill, Fletcher, Brit, Braithwaite, ....[for example].
Maybe we set a president?
Either way, we have the support, the stadium, better facilities than almost every club in the Championship and the right Management / Recruitment team to get the right players in....(y)

That might well be part of it. Plus it's being widely reported we've got a fair bit of cash to spend.

Suppose the other thing is not every club needs the money to reinvest or intends to reinvest the money into their squad. In which case they can afford to wait a bit to see if they'll get a better offer.

As you say we paid the premium to bring signings in early under Monk and look where that left us. Not surprised we're not going down than route again.

No we paid a premium on rubbish, that was the problem.

Yes of course not all players come from the SE but with respect half the problem is where a player from outside the area has a choice, and invariably the players we want to attract probably do have a choice, whether to travel to North Yorkshire or go to a club elsewhere then I think we will find they choose elsewhere for the reasons already mooted above. The North East has a lot of attractions but for a single man of 22 not so much as a married older player. Paul Merson came to Middlesbrough in 1998 for one reason and one reason alone and it wasnt the delights of the NY countryside.
