Athens - must dos

Visit the British Museum first to see the Elgin Marbles...

Been a long time since I went but I seem to remember that once you had done the Acropolis and Parthenon there wasn't an awful lot else?

The panathenaic stadium is great. We did it a couple of weeks ago.

Keep your wallet and phones in front pockets = must do!!!

We walked up Lebbeticus hill, the highest part of the city with fantastic 360 views, which help you visualise the vastness of the city

Crazy, ugly, amazing city! The amphitheatre at Epidauros is incredible, but a little way out of town.

The metro is excellent. €4.20 for 24 hrs.

We had 3 nights there, and did plenty, but I was glad to get out of the place, to be honest

Strolling round Plaka, Changing of the guard outside parliament, great views from Filopappou hill and 'free' walking tour

I went to Athens in June for 3 nights. Quickly became one of my favourite cities.

Don't bother with "fast track" for the Acropolis - the ticket office line is non-existent (5 mins) and then once you have a ticket you join the same line as the fast track anyway (we queued for about 45 mins).

I agree with Panathenaic Stadium - we didn't go inside but it was only 5 euro I think.

Plaka and Monastiraki Square are a must - A lot of people warned us about pickpocketing, but I found it very safe/friendly - no worse than any other European city (Rome, Barcelona, London).

We stayed in an apartment on Syntagma Square - there's a long road to Monastiraki Square - at the end of it there's a restaurant where it seems everyone in Athens is eating outside.
Can't remember the name of it but it's massive, you'll definitely see it - Well worth it for the Greek food (if you can get a table).

Buy the multi site seeing ticket for around 30 euros that gets you into the Acropolis and six other archaeological sites, the Panathenaic site is not included but it is only 5 euros and about 200 yards from the Olympian Gate which is included on the ticket which provides a good saving as it is around 20 euros into the Acropolis then between 5 and 10 euros into the others on the deal.
All the site are walkable over a couple of days passing Parliament and a few other points of interest en route.
