Rumours of ticket overselling and likely police mismanagement cannot detract from the absolute necessity to keep fans off the pitch. A tragic event which could easily be replicated anywhere in the world.

It looks like it was more of a stampede and then a crush which caused the fatalities.
Home crowd kicked off after defeat.

Accounts say the crowd came onto the pitch and the police fired tear gas. That was the cause of the stampede.

Malang is where my brother first lived in Indonesia back in 1993. Even then their football fans/hooligans were notorious. He was told by his host family under no circumstances was he to go to this stadium. Supporters would often wear motorbike helmets as almost every games rocks and projectiles were thrown..

The rivalry between Malang and Surabaya clubs is the worst of all in Indonesia. There were no Surabaya fans in this stadium (they had already been banned years ago) so it was just the Malang fans running amok (another Indonesian word that has made it into the English lexicon) with the Indonesian police etc

In a real twist of fate the name Malang actually means "loss/poor (as in pityful) / bad luck" in Bahasa so unfortunately they lived up to their name in a tragic way
