There was a book written by a Chesterfield fan called Losing My Religion - I have lost it now but basically he has moved to Chesterfield as a young man and become totally enraptured by them following home and away and then John Duncan is appointed manager. Now, this just shows how blinkered you can become in football fandom. He absolutely detests John Duncan's playing style. Long ball. And his hatred eventually destroys his passion. He wants them to lose games. He watches the cup run every step of the way but seems to increasingly hate every minute. He watches the incredible semi final from the other side and although he is drawn into the drama he has already lost his love for Chesterfield. At the end of the replay he shakes hands with Boro fans over the fence and walks away from Chesterfield and football. I often wondered if he ever looked back with regret. He missed out on so much through his stubbornness and even wrote a book that made him look somewhat mad. I shook hands over the fence at Hillsborough with Spireite fans I wonder if the author was one. Amazon
