Arthur Wharton (& David Speedie)

Intersting Guardian piece about Arthur Wharton, a trailblazing black footballer/runner of the 1890s, who made his life and career around Rotherham. The effort to have his exploits recognised has been championed by none other then pocket-sized Scottish forward (and erstwhile scourge of the Boro) David Speedie. Inevitably, as it always seems with these stories, Wharton "died in poverty".

I didn't know Speedie had been a miner. I also didn't know (as his Wikipedia page mentions) he'd been accused of being racist (something he vehemently denied).
