Arsenal v Spurs

Justice for Spurs scoring straight after kick off..never a pen (Romeros hand was in a natural place) - VAR proving more a hindrance than good

Spurs seem to play better without Kane. I think maybe they were too reliant on Kane, maybe a case of pass the ball to him and he'll do something, now the way they play all players have to get involved.

I don't really have a problem with the penalty.

Natural or not, his hand definitely blocked a direct shot on goal.

I'd have more sympathy for the natural argument if it had been a cross or going away from the goal.

Would like Spurs to win, I have an irrational dislike of Arteta for some reason. Something about him just winds me up.

It had to be a penalty, I couldn't believe it took so much time to think about, time I spent shouting at Gary Neville :)

The shot was on target goal bound. There was a defender behind to the right but its debatable whether he’d have stopped it. The whole rule is as clear as mud. Not sure your forearm pointing up is a natural position either. Pen for me.

Mitoma has to be the signing of the decade, bought for £2.7 Mill, it'll only be a matter of time before he gets a big move

But the law says the following:

So I don’t think it’s unnatural for Romero to have his arm slightly to his side for balance. If he’s stood still on the six yard line with arms spread out wide, I accept that. But he’s moving, and uses his arms for balance.

It's the Ange Postecoglou effect. The bloke is a genius

I agree. Romero made his body naturally bigger not unnaturally bigger so should not have been a penalty according to the letter of the law. VAR useless again.

Handball has always been a difficult rule - ever since I've watched foot all it seems 50:50 on every decision despite rule clarifications.

People have both said 100% pen and 100% pen on this thread.

Don't think there is anyway to fix this unless you say all lower arm contact is handball or only 100% intentional (ie you can stand with your arms out, but only if you actively use your hands). Everything else has a lot of grey area.

To me - by the law it wasn't handball.

As far as VAR goes - I just wish it was more open like the rugby.

"It hits his arm, I think you should look at it" (you could see that after 1 replay).

"I think he has kept his arm out from his body to make himself bigger, therefore it is a penalty - but not intentional - so no card"

I don't think it was a "natural" position, so I'm fine with it being a penalty under the current laws.

But the lawmakers are constantly writing themselves in to trouble in attempting to give a definitive definition for a subjective decision.

Whatever the changes to the laws in the future, that Romero handball should be a penalty under them.

Blocking a direct shot on goal with your hand should be a penalty.
