Are we the most misspelt area in the country

It always reminds me of Derby. Spelt Derby, most people call it Darby and the people who live there call it Dorby!

The opening question is an interesting one though. Middlesbrough might have just the right blend of being 'big enough' to actually get written about sometimes (although quite often it's by the writers of "The ten sh*ttest places to live in the UK").... but too small/insignificant to most people that they actually care to know or check!!

place name spellings change over time - its no big deal.

Mydilsburgh is the earliest recorded form.

I think this where the confusion comes from. It's original name being a "burgh" rather borough. So we've ended up with brough, not borough. But most places of course are "boroughs" so I can forgive the mistake.

No excuse for "teeside" though.

I thought it was called Middlesbrough because they spelt it wrong when they submitted the name in the first place!

That was my understanding too, the o was said to have been missed out, it was allegedly meant to be Middlesborough. However, over many generations since the error, the football club has always done its utmost to sneak the missing letter back in, albeit at the end. We often see it represented as Middlesbrough 0

If that's true, then all these other folk are actually spelling it correctly!
It's not, here's the 1803 map when it was 'nobbut' a farm house. Mind you the team would have been playing at Airsholme Park by the looks of it then popping to the Linthorp for a swift half afterwards.

Edit: By the way their away to Thornalby next week!!
