Are Carrick's pre game handshakes up to the job.

As anyone who witnessed Conte and tuchels handshake last season will know this is a contest of dominance. Football managers don't shake hands like normal people. They are rutting stags.

The most common method is a late release. Some footballing handshakes last for up to five minutes as neither manager wants to be the first to release. Witness guardiola and cooper yesterday. It lasted all the way down the tunnel to the benches. The forest coaches recognising their boss is in trouble profer their hands to guardiola to try to trigger the release. Pep was not to be deterred and city ran out easy winners even with ten men.

Other tactics are a vice like grip and various hugs and backpats that can be applied.

Now our man Carrick is at a natural advantage thanks to being deceptively tall so you would expect him to be good at the handshake.

Yet we have fallen behind in every single game this year and always start poorly. This can only be down to the players having witnessed their manager losing the handshake and doubting his competence.

I’d suggest he does what the Spanish football president does, and pick up the opposing manager and forcefully kiss him on the lips to show his dominance.

I can only assume it's a double bluff and he's hoping it makes the opposition start slowly out of sympathy. Worked last year evidently and fair play he's sticking with his process.

I noticed at full time yesterday that a Southampton coach refused the handshake of the referee on his way into the tunnel, who shrugged it off with a "suit yourself then."

It wasn't the ref's fault that they lost to the team at the bottom of the league...
