Appleby Fair

They cause absolute mayhem and leave an unimaginable mess behind themselves including human excrement - the locals in Appleby as you can imagine dread their arrival every year

Some set up on Harrogate's Stray this week .. as you can imagine didnt go down well with some of the locals

I have been to Appleby a few times and it was always a great day out. Like all the fairs (Yarm, Stokesley, Northallerton), the locals don't like it when they turn up but these residents knew what they were buying into when they moved in. The fairs were there long before them.

On the site I stay in France, there is always a large group of gypsies, they are never any trouble and the locals and French people treat them like anyone else. In this country, they seem to be persecuted where ever they go.

I also have a lot of friends in South Bank who are gypsies or are from gypsy heritage. As a 15 year old, I use to look after the horses they weren't taken to Appleby and would keep them on local farms. I would have a deal with a local farmer per head of horse and would charge the travelers slightly more. I always got paid upfront and it was much better than having a paper round.

I also had a sideline selling barrows of manure to the guys over the allotments.

I filmed at Aplleby about a decade ago. Didn't have a moment's bother with the travellers, even in quite tense situations with the RSPCA. I really enjoyed it.
The only serious issues weresome dogs locked in a car which died.
The owners weren't travellers.
