Anybody Take Statins to Lower Cholesterol?

Can’t help, sorry, but is there an easy/free way to get your cholesterol tested?

GP could help and definitely worth a visit if you're worried about your cholesterol levels.

I went about something totally unrelated, he was more concerned about something on my skin, tested the cholesterol and it led to my gall bladder being removed. (Not all in one afternoon, I hasten to add)

My wife takes them and has for some years. The only side effect she has encountered is that certain high fat foods, how can I put this delicately, pay only a brief visit to her digestive system.

Was offered them a year ago, but I was borderline and under the older system I would have been below the requirement level, so decided not too.

A lot of years ago (20?) my sister took them and then jacked them off, reckons she confused her way through three years on them. I also believe my former business partner lost the edge (to say the least) when he started on them 15 years ago. That said if you need them they may save your life,so don’t listen to me. Also they may have moved on in the last ten years, talk to your doc.

You mean “jacked them in” I presume?

They are known to cause joint pain and swelling. Other people feel sick (like vomiting).

I think 9m people on the UK are on statins which shocked me and must be a big cost to the NHS. Ok some people need them if their CL is high, but mine was a bit above average and they wanted me on them. So I can understand the 9m figure.

9m say times 50p times 365 = £1.65bn

Not especially worried but just fancy getting it checked. Thanks.

I take atorvastatin 5mg. One a day for the last 8 yrs. Never had any side effects and my levels are kept low and stable

My cholestoral went down from 7.4 to 3.5 after a few weeks on them. Been taking them for 2 years now without any problems

Been on them as prevention due to Mum and Dad health issues. Not had any issues but I don't seem to get side effects from any tablets. I react well to everything. I think a lot comes down to your lifestyle.

I have been taking rosuvastatin 5mg 3 times a week for about 5 years now and cholesterol is 3.2.
Never had any side effects.

the values they are guided by in NHS funding generally work out the value and risk vs reward for medication regimes.

In this case the negatives of cholesterol are deemed far more expensive than its prophylactic management.

Heart surgery on once person probably costs 15 grand plus. Preventing one buys you a lot of statins. Then quality of life after heart surgery and potential care throws a whole new cost in.

Statins are a bargain.

As for side effects, the majority are side effect free. Worth reading up on the side effect risk profile online.

If you don't get on with them you can always change them or stop them.

Get the sulfur burps and feel rough with really greasy food like full English’s or Chinese food, I tend not to eat them now because of it so that’s another bonus.

Apart from that not much but again it’s only a slight dose I’m on

Thanks for these comments. I have been in consultation with the doc and he is suggesting I go on them as my cholesterol is on the high side. I’ve heard some mixed stories and to be fair doc is giving me the option to take them or not.
