Anthony Vickers - Over & Out

Sorry to read that. Personally I always thought he did a great job of telling a story.
For those of us not living in the area , he often wrote in a way that gave us, at least in my view, a sense of what the "vibe' was and helped one imagine that we were actually there, in the game or at the pub' in full discourse.
Maybe people were correct when we talked about the death of local papers a few weeks ago... Boro stories are certainly going to be a lot duller.

Best of luck to him whatever he does next.
And Buffalo I think you are right in suggesting that this goes hand in hand with the demise of the local paper. Did the Gazette have three journalists covering the Boro? In these days of reduced circulation and sales that might have seemed extravagant to the bean counters at Reach.

that's really sad. I always enjoyed reading his stuff, even if I didn't agree with it. I guess the completely over the top backlash of him discussing Teesside as not being the no1 choice for WAGs must have lead to this.
Best of luck to him in his next move.

I don't think so, it sounds like it has been coming a while.

I always liked reading Anthony Vickers. To me, he represented what you would hope from a wordsmith- well crafted, passionate, informative and from the heart. His pieces were often thought- provoking.

Without a doubt, a big and sad loss for the Gazette. And indeed it’s readers. Thanks, AV,your unique style will be missed by this reader - greatly

I wonder who the club’s new press officer will be?

I lost what little respect I had for him after he wrote an article stating ‘The notion clubs need ticket cash to compete is gone. It’s naked greed’ then 6 months later wrote a separate article defending Boro’s season ticket rises after promotion as they were needed to compete.

Jaded journo justifies his own demise as editor hits the redundancy hyperdrive and father time blows the full time whistle...

Only joking.

I always looked for his 'colour' pieces on the match as I think he writes really well about the interaction between a crowd and what is happening on the pitch. He always insightful on the relentless pressure of playing in the top two leagues chipping away at the players, those in the dug out and in the stands. He does 'get it'.

I didn't realise his time at the Gazette pretty much completely mirrors my time and life as a match going Boro supporter so his absence will be felt.

He's easily got a few books in him, and if The Athletic is still recruiting, it would be good to have a journalist dedicated to Boro, as its obviously pre-occupied with the mental breakdown that is Newcastle.

He's got to learn how to use Zoom in these COVID days... bloody hell!

I always enjoyed reading his articles. His popcasts were always worth a listen.

It's a shame he's hanging up his type writer (old school😂). I am sure he will remain the industry. He could maybe apply for the head of recruitment😂

Best of luck on any future endeavours👍

Undoubtedly a very good writer, I always felt he brought a bit of balance and realism with the exception of the recent ‘satanic mills’ piece - which I doubt had anything to do with him leaving

the new model seems to be clubs doing a lot more of their own PR and news stuff so it’s inevitable local papers will suffer for info. When we the last time the EG had a real scoop or even said anything contrary to the club line?

I hope he is still around in some way, he’s very knowledgeable about the game. Maybe he’ll post on here - if he doesn’t already

Huge shame. One of the few writers who can capture the *feel* of a game and put it in words. Some of his stuff on Traore positively bounced off the screen, did three stepovers and left you on your **** in admiration of the prose.

On the positive side, perhaps now we will learn if he ever *posted* on FMTTM, and under what well-hidden guise :)
